A rafter is a structural component build of wood or steel that is used as part of a roof construction. Rafter runs from the ridge or hip of the roof to the wall plate of the external wall. Rafters are generally provide in series, side by side, providing a plateform to support roof decks and roof coverings.

In many countries such as in US, Canada United Kingdom roof rafter made of wood/ timber are much common to build a house. Many species of wood are used to provide timber which have much strength. Rafters are usually made of pine or cedar tree, for longer span rafters, building materials severals manufacturers have created Laminated veneer lumber (LVL) rafters that can be 2–5 times longer than typical wood rafter. In US, most wood rafters have maximum length of 20 feet.

The term clear span is distance between two end support, generally comes up a lot whether constructing a home, shed, or deck. The span of roof rafter will depend on load condition, slope, wood species, grade of lumber, climatic condition, locality where you live, building codes and design of structure.

Depending on various factors, a #1 grade of Southern yellow pine (SYP) 2×6 roof rafter can span a maximum of 12′- 6” far apart at 16” spacing, 13′- 9” at 12” spacing, or 10′-11″ at 24″ spacing without support.

A #2 grade of Southern yellow pine (SYP) 2×6 roof rafter can span a maximum of 12′- 3” far apart at 16” spacing, 13′- 6” at 12” spacing, or 10′-2″ at 24″ spacing without support.

A #1 grade of Douglas Fir & Larch (DFL) 2×6 roof rafter can span a maximum of 12′- 6” far apart at 16” spacing, 13′- 9” at 12” spacing, or 10′-5″ at 24″ spacing without support.

A #2 grade of Douglas Fir & Larch (DFL) 2×6 roof rafter can span a maximum of 11′- 11” far apart at 16” spacing, 13′- 6” at 12” spacing, or 9′-9″ at 24″ spacing without support.

A #1 grade of Spruce/ pine Fir (SPF) 2×6 roof rafter can span a maximum of 11′- 9” far apart at 16” spacing, 12′- 11” at 12” spacing, or 9′-9″ at 24″ spacing without support.

A #2 grade of Spruce/ pine Fir (SPF) 2×6 roof rafter can span a maximum of 11′- 9” far apart at 16” spacing, 12′- 11” at 12” spacing, or 9′-9″ at 24″ spacing without support.

A #1 grade of Hem Fir (HF) 2×6 roof rafter can span a maximum of 12′- 0” far apart at 16” spacing, 13′- 3” at 12” spacing, or 10′-2″ at 24″ spacing without support.

A #2 grade of Hem Fir (HF) 2×6 roof rafter can span a maximum of 11′- 5” far apart at 16” spacing, 12′- 7” at 12” spacing, or 9′-7″ at 24″ spacing without support.
