How far can a 4″, 6″, 8″ & 10 inch Z purlin span

It is often ask “how far can a Z purlin span?”, as per thumb rule, a Z or C shaped metal purlin can allow to span 3 times of its depth. A four inch purlin can allow to span 12 feet. A six inch purlin can allow to span 18 feet. An eight inch purlin can allow to span 25 feet. A ten inch purlin can span 30 feet.

How far can a 4 inch Z purlin span

As per general thumb rules and guidelines, a 4 inch (100mm) Z purlin can allow to span 12 feet far distance. Thus, for a 12 foot span, you will need atleast 4″ thick Z shaped metal purlin. Thus a 4 inch depth of Z shaped purlin is most suitable for 12 feet span which can safely transfer the load they carry to trusses.

How far can a 6 inch Z purlin span

As per general thumb rules and guidelines, a 6 inch (150mm) Z purlin can allow to span 18 feet far distance. Thus, for a 18 foot span, you will need atleast 6″ thick Z shaped metal purlin. Thus a 6 inch depth of Z shaped purlin is most suitable for 18 feet span which can safely transfer the load they carry to trusses.

How far can a 8 inch Z purlin span

As per general thumb rules and guidelines, a 8 inch (200mm) Z purlin can allow to span 25 feet far distance. Thus, for a 25 foot span, you will need atleast 8″ thick Z shaped metal purlin. Thus a 8 inch depth of Z shaped purlin is most suitable for 25 feet span which can safely transfer the load they carry to trusses.

How far can a 10 inch Z purlin span

As per general thumb rules and guidelines, a 10 inch (250mm) Z purlin can allow to span 30 feet far distance. Thus, for a 30 foot span, you will need atleast 10″ thick Z shaped metal purlin. Thus a 10 inch depth of Z shaped purlin is most suitable for 30 feet span which can safely transfer the load they carry to trusses.

Conclusion:-
A Z purlin can allow to span 3 times of its depth, 4″ Z inch purlin can allow to span 12 feet, a six inch purlin-18 feet, a eight inch purlin-25 feet and a ten inch purlin can allow to span 30 feet.
