A bag of concrete ready mix made of blended mix of Portland cement, sand gravel and other approved ingredient or admixture, generally, dry ready mix concrete are available in different bag size and weight condition like 40lb, 60lb bag, 80lb bag, 90lb bag and etc.

Regardless of size you need to calculate the volume of concrete in cubic yard or in cubic feet before ordering the mixed concrete. Volume is calculated by multiplying length, width and depth of slab. Here you have given a slab of 12 feet in length and 10 feet in wide, what is thickness of slab?, it’s depend on, is this a slab on the ground or it is elevated, rules differ for both, since failure of ground slab would not kill anyone whereas failure of an elevated slab could.

Thumb rules involves the safety factor that deciding the thickness of slab, 4 inch thick is generally for ground slab, heavy traffic and heavy load, you should take depth 5 or 6 inch thick and for an elevated slab generally thickness should be span/24, such as 12 feet/ 24 = 6 inch, 5″ and 4 inch thick is also made to use in normal conditions.

Generally standard thickness of slab is 4 inch thick in normal conditions, if 10×12 slab have heavy traffic and heavy load, you should take depth 5 or 6 inch thick. In this article we have to calculate required quantity of concrete in cubic yard & in cubic feet for a 10×12 (120 sq ft) slab at 4 inch, 5 inch or 6 inch thick.

Weight of Ready mix concrete in dry condition is about 133 lbs per cubic foot, 3600 lbs per cubic yard, or approximately equal as 2136 kg per cubic meter. The weight of concrete is determined by its density, which can vary based on the amount of aggregate, water, and air in the mix.

In United States, based on Imperial and US customary measurement system, 1 cubic yard is unit of measurement of volume represented by 3 feet long by 3 feet wide by 3 feet depth (3’×3’×3′ = 27 cubic feet), so 1 cubic yard is equal to 27 cubic feet.

How many bags of concrete do I need for a 10×12 slab

To determine how many bags of premixed concrete you will need, divide the total cubic yards needed by the yield. Use the following yields per each bag size: A 40 pound bag yields 0.011 cubic yards, 60 pound bag yields 0.017 cubic yards, 50 pound bag yields 0.0138 cubic yards and 80 pound bag yields 0.022 cubic yards.

If you measure their yields in cubic feet, then yields per each bag size are following: A 40 pound bag yields 0.30 cubic feet, 60 pound bag yields 0.45 cubic feet, 50 pound bag yields 0.375 cubic feet and 80 pound bag yields 0.60 cubic feet.

To figure the amount of yards of concrete you will need, take the all measurements Length in feet, width in feet and thickness in inches. Convert thickness in feet. Multiply its length, width and thickness to get cubic footage. Multiply the total cubic footage by 0.037 to get total yards of concrete needed.

To determine the how many bags of concrete do I need for a 10×12 slab, you can solve in following steps:-

Step 1 :- calculate the volume in cubic feet:- you have given 10×12 slab (length × width), consider it is 4 inch thick, 4 inch = 0.33 feet, to determine the volume of slab, you need to multiply all dimensions, such that = 10′×12′× 0.33′ = 39.6 cubic foot, at 5 inch thick, volume of slab is 10′×12′× 0.416 = 50 cubic foot and at 6 inch thick, volume of slab is 10′×12′× 0.5 = 60 cubic foot.

Step 2 :- converting cubic feet into cubic yard:- now converting into cubic yard, you should divide it by 27, so volume of concrete you needed for 10 ×12 slab at 4 inch thick in cubic yard = 39.6/27 = 1.46 cubic yards, at 5 inch thick = 50/27 = 1.85 cubic yards & at at 6 inch thick = 60/27 = 2.22 cubic yards.

Step 3:- add 10% extra which would be wastage during mixing and pouring.

Step 4:- to determine how many bags of concrete you will need, divide the total cubic yards needed by the yields, as you know premixed bag of concrete available in 40lb, 60lb, 80lb & 90lb. 40lb bag of concrete yields about 0.011 cubic yards, 60lb bag of concrete yields about 0.017 cubic yards, 80lb bag of concrete yields about 0.022 cubic yards and 90lb bag of concrete yields about 0.025 cubic yards.

For a 10×12 slab, you would need approximately 1.47 yards (39.6 cubic feet, or either 66- 80lb, 88- 60lb bags) of concrete at 4″ thick, 1.85 yards (50 cubic feet, or either 84- 80lb, 112- 60lb bags) of concrete at 5″ thick, 1.11 yards (30 cubic feet, or either 50- 80lb, 67- 60lb bags) of concrete at 3″ thick, or 2.22 yards (60 cubic feet, or either 100- 80lb, 134- 60lb bags) of concrete at 6″ thick.

● 4″ thickness in feet = 4/12 = 0.33′
● Volume of concrete in cubic feet = 10 × 12 × 0.33 = 39.6
● Volume of concrete in yards = 39.6 × 0.037 = 1.47 yards.
● No. of 80lb bags = 39.6/0.60 = 66 bags
● No. of 60lb bags = 39.6/0.45 = 88 bags
● No. of 50lb bags = 39.6/0.375 = 106 bags
● No. of 40lb bags = 39.6/0.30 = 132 bags

At 5 inches thick, for a 10×12 slab you would need 1.85 cubic yards or 50 cubic feet of concrete. If you use premix concrete, either 84 80-Pound, 112 60-pound, 134 50-pound, or 167 40-pound bags of premixed concrete will be required.

Let’s do calculation and proceeds following steps:

● 5″ thickness in feet = 4/12 = 0.417′
● Volume of concrete in cubic feet = 10 × 12 × 0.417 = 50
● Volume of concrete in yards = 50 × 0.037 = 1.85 yards.
● No. of 80lb bags = 50/0.60 = 84 bags
● No. of 60lb bags = 50/0.45 = 112 bags
● No. of 50lb bags = 50/0.375 = 134 bags
● No. of 40lb bags = 50/0.30 = 167 bags.

At 3 inches thick, for a 10×12 slab you would need 1.11 cubic yards or 30 cubic feet of concrete. If you use premix concrete, either 50 80-Pound, 67 60-pound, 80 50-pound, or 100 40-pound bags of premixed concrete will be required.

Let’s do calculation and proceeds following steps:

● 3″ thickness in feet = 3/12 = 0.25′
● Volume of concrete in cubic feet = 10 × 12 × 0.25 = 30
● Volume of concrete in yards = 30 × 0.037 = 1.11 yards.
● No. of 80lb bags = 30/0.60 = 50 bags
● No. of 60lb bags = 30/0.45 = 67 bags
● No. of 50lb bags = 30/0.375 = 80 bags
● No. of 40lb bags = 30/0.30 = 100 bags.

At 2 inches thick, for a 10×12 slab you would need 0.737 cubic yards or 19.92 cubic feet of concrete. If you use premix concrete, either 34 80-Pound, 45 60-pound, 54 50-pound, or 67 40-pound bags of premixed concrete will be required.

Let’s do calculation and proceeds following steps:

● 2″ thickness in feet = 2/12 = 0.166′
● Volume of concrete in cubic feet = 10 × 12 × 0.166 = 19.92
● Volume of concrete in yards = 19.92 × 0.037 = 0.737 yards.
● No. of 80lb bags = 19.92/0.60 = 34 bags
● No. of 60lb bags = 19.92/0.45 = 45 bags
● No. of 50lb bags = 19.92/0.375 = 54 bags
● No. of 40lb bags = 19.92/0.30 = 67 bags.

Cost estimate for 10’×12’×4″ slab

Pre-mixed concrete bags cost on average $3.50 per 80lb bag. There are 66 bags of 80 pound premix concrete are required for 10×12 slab at 4″ thick. Using pre-mixed bags to cover 10×12 (120 sq ft) at a depth of 4″, the estimated cost is $231 (66× $3.50 = $231).

Cost estimate for 10’×12’×5″ slab
