Steel beam is also known as Universal beam or UB’s or I beam or H beam, W beam, rolled steel joist (rsj), S shaped i beam, double T due to their shape. Steel beam are very versatile and can be used in various structural Steel construction project.

Structural i beam is consist of two horizontal plates known as flanges connected by vertical component known as web. Generally depth of I beam or steel beam is greater than their width which makes them suitable for beam application where strength needs to be in one of direction. Which is the most often used section for structural Steel purpose.

A rolled steel joist (RSJ) is a common type of beam used for structural steelwork. It is also known as an ‘I-beam’. Rolled steel joist (srj) are usually made from mild steel but can also be formed from aluminium or other materials.

Steel i beam or universal beam are extremely effective for use as structural Steel. they provide the maximum amount of strength for the volume of Steel used in making them the most efficient method of carrying bending and shear loads. Generally as per American standard ASTM- 36 wide flange of structural i beam represented by W or S shaped and their designation depth in inches × weight per ft lbs. The weight per foot of an I-beam is given in the identifier for the beam.

A W8x10 I-beam is about 8″ tall, and weighs 10 lbs/foot. The flanges are about 4″ wide. This is a pretty light weight beam. The web gets thicker and the flanges get wider and thicker to make stronger beams, and the weight/foot goes up. A W12x50 weighs 50lbs/ foot.

This also makes it easy to figure out how heavy the I-beam is going to be and what sort of preparations you have to make for moving and installing it. If you order a W12x35 18 feet long, it will weigh 35×18 = 630 lbs.

Variation among the universal beam include material, length of the web and depth of flanges. Different weight loads and area will require different measurement on the beam, the longer the web, the more force it can stand up and down, the wider of flange, the more side to side movement the Beam can withstand. Wide flange beam are also known as W- beam.

In the US as per AISC coding, the designation includes the nominal depth, the cross-sectional shape and the weight in pounds per foot. For example W4×7.7 I- beam is 4 inches tall and weighs 7.7 lbs/ft. The flanges are about 2.66″ wide.
