Roof valley: definition, types, installation & uses

A roof valley is a V-shaped or U-shaped trough formed by the intersection of two sloping roof surfaces. It’s designed to channel rainwater and snowmelt away from the roof and down to the gutters or eaves, helping to prevent water infiltration and damage to the building structure. Roof valleys are a common feature in roofing to ensure proper drainage.

In this article i shall briefly discussed about the roof valley, types of roof valley, how to install roof vally and it’s advantages. If you asked people randomly what roof valleys are, most of them would probably have no knowledge.

Acquired the classical appearance and good looking roof covering design in world such as United States, Canadian roofing, northern australia and snow regions where got heavy rainfall etc.that is also feeling a classical appearance and beauty look.

Roof valley

Roof valleys design are providing in that areas where these areas are usually the most problem prone areas of the roof. They are challenge to protect properly from moisture and weather conditions, due to reasons roof valleys are installing for covering roof which is available in several lists three types of valleys open valleys, closed valleys, woven valleys.

Roof valleys design are constructed in the areas on roof where the slopes meet, forming a v angle where water usually runs off and improved drainage system and also consist the a good importance is that the durable, long lasting roof covering and lightweight for construction of perfect roof valley. These are look just like valleys which is protect properly from moisture and weather conditions.

“What are roof valleys?” most of people would probably have no idea about roof valleys, here we introduced the roof valleys. Roof valleys are junction in a roof marking change in the direction that is typically found where the gable dormer roofs meet the main roof.

In simple word we understand the the valley area of roof – is a critical area of valleys roof when different planes of the two roof section meet which is perfectly handles the amount of water run off or in other words where the two sections of the house meet always will have roof valleys.

A house with an L shaped or T shaped foot print or house has angled wings consider always will have roof valleys where the two roof section in different planes meet, the opposing surfaces of the roof planes drain the water towards the roof valleys area, where it is then channeled towards the edge of the roof.

It is important to understand how a valley roof is constructed, a new home designs consist the multiple gables and roof configuration, when two sections of roof planes meet at inside corner a roof valleys construction is created due to reasons valleys would collect and channel a greater volume of water than a single roof plane, this is always make an extra effort to design and construct them as watertight as possible.

Roof valleys are provide the effective design of roof covering in world and snow regions that is acquired good looking, classical appearance and widely used in modern construction due to these can be weather resistantant easier and faster to install than the some other form of roof support, that is also very strong and stable design in construction.

Types of roof valley

Types of roof valley are consist the two common methods for completing the flashing of a valley in a shingle roof system and important to understand the what type of makes a valley , these are two types of roof valley following as:-

1. Closed valley roof

2. Open valley roof

Closed valley roof

Closed roof valley construction is often considered when shingles on one or both sides of the roof extends across the valley on the adjacent roof slope which is install the underlayment for protect the an ice and water material that adheres to the roof decking and also protect properly the valley from effect of water and weather conditions.

First install the underlayment, the roofer will then install the shingles due to that they overlap where the opposing planes of the valley meet.

Construction of closed roof valley is the depend to the choice of homeowners that is mostly prefer the closed roof valley over the open valley and many homeowners also like the closed valley roof due to the lower cost, avoiding the use of metal flashing can provide homeowners save a good deal of money on their installing of new valley roof and looking a beautiful.

What is a closed valley roof?

Regarding this, “what is a closed valley roof?”, closed roof valley is a roof type construction in a most problem prone area in which shingles on one or both sides of the roof extends across the valley on the adjacent roof slope that is serve as the valley lining and the wear surface to protect against weather conditions and water.

In the design of closed roof the roofer will install the shingles onto the rock deck and extend the asphalt shingles through the area where opposing section of roof planes meet that is called closed valley roof.

When construction is finished, then the roof valley will be covered with shingles so that the selfadhering underlayment is completely covered with the asphalt shingles that is protect properly the valley from effect of water and weather conditions.

Advantages of closed valley roof

● Closed valley roof can be slightly less expensive

● Closed valley roof can be difficult to install in case of valley angles are sharp.

● This is blends with rest of roof
Open valley.

Open valley roof

Open valley construction is consist the roof covering meterial ends several inches short of the centerline of the valley and provide a lining made of metal protects the valley from moisture and weather conditions and greatly make as possible watertight.

In the design of open roof valley, there is provided an extra layer underlayment to the roof valley, then a metal piece is installed in the valley itself, the metal piece can be consider the V shaped or W shaped liner that is protects from water that moves across the valley.

In this type of valleys, shingles are installed to cover part of the valley before being cut out of the valley area, leaving thipe metal surface showing and open to the elements.

Providing the metal in lining can be copper, aluminium, stainless steel, galvanized steel, that is provide the proper accent to the roof covering appearance and beautiful look.

Installing a open valley with architectural or laminated shingles is good appearance and have a key advantage system holds up better over time including longevity.

What is an open valley roof?

Regarding this, “what is an open valley roof?”, open valley roof is a roof covering type which is consist the roof covering meterial ends several inches short of the centerline of the valley and provide a lining made of metal protects the valley from moisture and weather conditions and greatly make as possible watertight and efficiently best suited valley roof.

In the design of open roof valley provide the metal over the extra layer of underlayment that is protect the rain, snow and ice to flow easily off with roof.the metal is consist the made of copper, stainless steel which is perfect material and exposed metal that is allows everything to wash easily off with open valley roof.

Advantages of open roof valley

● Open valley roof consist the exposed metal that may improve appearance and weather resistant.

• this is simplifies shingles installation

• provide the better resistant against water and weather conditions.

Which roof valley type is best?

Mostly people would asked ” which roof valley type is best?”, In the installation of close roof valley or open roof valley most roofing design and choice is depend according to its cases and homeowners preference, mostly roofing homeowners agree that the open roof valley is superior than closed valley roof due to open roof valley is thought to be less troublesome in the long run and other important factors that is made best valley type which are following as –

● Improved drainage – in the design of open roof valley provide the metal over the extra layer of underlayment that is protect the rain, snow and ice to flow easily off with roof. The metal is consist the made of copper, stainless steel which is perfect material and exposed metal that is allows everything to wash easily off with open valley roof.

● Plenty of variety – like as copper, aluminium, stainless steel which material will work in an open valley roof installation that is allows complete washing and contrasting material proper eccent.

● Ease of installation- the design of open roof valley are no special skils necessary for roofing skills, these installation are quickly and easily to install.

● Longevity- open roof valley is long life time due to use of metal that is provide the ages very long and looks beautiful.

● Aesthetic- architectural, designers have prefence the design of open roof valley ,it is important to the open valleys have the metal exposed that is easily wash everything and more pleasing to eye.

How to install roof valley

I shall discussed about the installation of roof valley, there are lots of techniques for shingling a valley woven, cut, open metal lined, here described on shingles wrappers that’s easier and faster to install that is greatly resistant to weather and looks beautiful.

These techniques work with laminated or random pattern shingles that comprise about 65 % of the shingles installed.prepare the valley by lining waterproof shingle underlayment like ice and water.

Installation of open valley relies on metal flashing for protection required the most necessary to select the flashing material
• Copper
• Aluminum
• Zinc
• Stainless steel

Step to install roof valley

1. Preparation the valley and shingles the low volume roof plane

First we lined the valley with efficient use of shingles underlayment that is consist waterproof for the work of protection of secondary water layer. shingle the low volume roof that is rin through the valley center and at least 12 inches up to the high volume roof, its best and sure to press the shingles rightly into the valley center.

2. Snap a guide line and spread a ribbon of roof cement

Design the valley 2 inches up from the centre on the high volume roof plane that is parallel to the snap a chalk line, then expand the 2-3 inch wide ribbon of trowel consistency roof cement about 2 inches over from and parallel to the chalk line on the high volume roof side of the line.

3. Run a row of shingles up the valley along diagonal chalk line

In this installation apply the full shingles with the top edge aligned with the chalk line at the eaves edge in the case of no cut valley distinguished itself, bed the shingles into the roof cement and drive fasteners along the shingles nail line.

4. Snap course lines and shingles the high volume roof

Each shingles course on the high volume roof to guide shingles installation by the striking chalk line horizontally and kept the bottom corner of the first shingles in each course to the valley edge of the diagonal shingles and also continue stacking the starter shingles up the whole valley to create a pyramid structure, then shingles out of the valley.

5. Seal the high volume roofs shingle corners

Seal the bottom corner of the high volume roof shingles with a dab of roof cement to keep them down, shingles with a self seal strip is out on the undesirable rather than the face.
