What size post for 4′, 6′, 10′, 12′, 14 and 16 foot gate

Post size: as a rule of thumb for free-standing wooden posts, use 4″ × 4″ (100mm x 100mm) lumber post for narrow gates for 4 to 6 feet wide and up to 4 feet (1200mm) high, use 5″ × 5″ (125mm x 125mm) posts for wide gates for 10 feet wide and 6 ft (1800mm) high and use at least 6″ × 6″ (150mm x 150mm) posts for 12 ft to 16ft wide gates.

It is important to use an anchor post or pipe large enough to hold the wooden gate. To hang a 14- to 16-foot gate, use a wood post six to eight inches in diameter such as 6″ × 6″ (150mm × 150mm) or 8″ × 8″ (200mm × 200mm), or a six-inch diameter pipe. Steel pipe has the longest life expectancy, but don’t let that deter you if pipe is not readily available or you don’t have the necessary tools to work with pipe.

Post hole size: for most, a lumber post should be concreted into a hole 2ft (600mm) deep and 1ft (300mm) wide in square shaped. A wider heavier gate such as a driveway gate, could require a hole 3ft (900mm) deep.

What size post for a 4 foot gate:- as per thumb rules and guidelines, for a 4 foot wide gate use 4″ × 4″ (100mm x 100mm) lumber/ wood post size for narrow gates up to 4 feet (1200mm) high. Thus you will need 4″×4″ size of wooden post for a 4ft wide gate. A lumber post 4″×4″ should be concreted into a hole 2ft (600mm) deep and 1ft (300mm) wide.

What size post for a 6 foot gate:- as per thumb rules and guidelines, for a 6 foot wide gate use 4″ × 4″ (100mm x 100mm) lumber/ wood post size for narrow gates up to 6 feet (1800mm) high. Thus you will need 4″×4″ size of wooden post for a 6ft wide gate. A lumber post 4″×4″ should be concreted into a hole 2ft (600mm) deep and 1ft (300mm) wide.

What size post for 10 foot gate:- as per thumb rules and guidelines, for a 10 foot wide gate use 5″ × 5″ (125mm x 125mm) lumber/ wood post size for wider gates up to 6 feet (1800mm) high. Thus you will need 5″×5″ size of wooden post for a 10ft wide gate.

What size post for 12 foot gate:- as per thumb rules and guidelines, for a 12 foot wide gate use 6″ × 6″ (150mm x 150mm) lumber/ wood post size for wider gates up to 8 feet (2400mm) high. Thus you will need 6″×6″ size of wooden post for a 12ft wide gate. A lumber/ wood post 6″×6″ should be concreted into a hole 2.5ft (750mm) deep and 1.5ft (450mm) wide for a 12 foot gate.

What size post for 14 foot gate:- as per thumb rules and guidelines, for a 14 foot wide gate use 6″ × 6″ (150mm x 150mm) lumber/ wood post size for wider gates up to 8 feet (2400mm) high. Thus you will need 6″×6″ size of wooden post for a 14ft wide gate. A lumber/ wood post 6″×6″ should be concreted into a hole 3ft (900mm) deep and 1.5ft (450mm) wide for a 14 foot gate.

What size post for 16 foot gate:– as per thumb rules and guidelines, for a 16 foot wide gate use 8″ × 8″ (200mm x 200mm) lumber/ wood post size for wider gates up to 8 feet (2400mm) high. Thus you will need 8″×8″ (200mm × 200mm) size of wooden post for a 16ft wide gate. A lumber/ wood post 8″×8″ should be concreted into a hole 3ft (900mm) deep and 2ft (600mm) wide for a 16 foot gate.

Conclusion:-
For a 4 to 6 foot wide gate use 4″ × 4″ (100mm x 100mm) lumber/ wood post size, use 5″ × 5″ (125mm x 125mm) posts size for 10 feet wide gate and use at least 6″ × 6″ (150mm x 150mm) or 8″×8″ (200mm × 200mm) posts for 12 to 16 foot wide gates.
