What size ridge beam for 2×4, 2×6, 2×8, 2×10 rafter | Ridge beam size for 2×4 rafter | what size Ridge beam for 2×6 rafters | Ridge beam size for 2×8 rafter | Ridge beam size for 2×10 rafter.

The Ridge Beam is the horizontal member of wood frame structure that is made of timber beam present at the apex of the roof. It has no structural function but is the horizontal member against which the high ends of the rafters lean. It also ensures that the rafters meet in a straight line and stay upright.

In many countries of world US, UK, Canada and others uses a house made of wood, that house has trussed roof, it is made of ridge beam, rafter and purlin, the rafters are the top chord of the truss roof and truss action spans the width of the building. In other cases, the timber rafters must span from the top of the roof to the top of the walls. The ridge beam supports the rafters at the top of the roof and is a bending member spanning between its supports generally across rooms.

In many countries such as in US, Canada United Kingdom roof rafter, ridge beam, purlin are made of wood/ timber are much common to build a house. Many species of wood are used to provide timber which have much strength. These all are usually made of pine or cedar tree, for longer span.

Many timber size such as 2×4, 2×6, 2×8, 2×10, 2×12, 2×14 etc are used as pulin, ridge beam and as rafter which are used in building frame structure of truss roof. In this article we know about what will be ridge beam size for 2×4, 2×6, 2×8, 2×10 rafter.

A ridge beam is a horizontal structural member used to support the ends of the rafters at the ridge, transferring it’s loads to walls or posts or gable end walls. In this way the Ridge beam provides a structural connection for the rafters and adds lateral side to side stability and form a rigid spine for the roof peak.

What size ridge beam for 2×4, 2×6, 2×8, 2×10 rafters

A ridge beam is a horizontal structural member used to connecting and support the ends of the rafters at the ridge, transferring it’s loads to walls or posts or gable end walls. Ridge beams are required by code if the roof slope is less than 3 in 12 (IRC section R802.3). Ridge beam sizing is based on the span of the beam between supports, and the amount of roof load supported by the beam.

Select a ridge beam that is one size/ dimension larger than your common rafters that put on hip of roof to wall. Generally for 2×4 rafters, use a 2×6 ridge beam, for 2×6 rafters, use a 2×8 ridge beam, for 2×8 rafters, use a 2×10 ridge beam, for 2×10 rafters, use a 2×12 ridge beam, for 2×12 rafters, use a 2×14 ridge beam, and so on. The ridge beam length will be the outside measurement of the building plus the length of the overhang at both ends

What size ridge beam for 2×4 rafters

for 2×4 rafters, generally we provide or use a 2×6 size ridge beam. This 2×6 size ridge beam length will be the outside measurement of the building plus the length of the overhang at both ends. Thus you can use 2×6 ridge beam for 2×4 size rafters, although it will depend on span of the beam & the amount of roof load, so it is better to consult your architect.

What size ridge beam for 2×6 rafters

for 2×6 rafters, generally we provide or use a 2×8 size ridge beam. This 2×8 size ridge beam length will be the outside measurement of the building plus the length of the overhang at both ends. Thus you can use 2×8 ridge beam for 2×6 size rafters, although it will depend on span of the beam & the amount of roof load, so it is better to consult your architect.

What size ridge beam for 2×8 rafters

for 2×8 rafters, generally we provide or use a 2×10 size ridge beam. This 2×10 size ridge beam length will be the outside measurement of the building plus the length of the overhang at both ends. Thus you can use 2×10 ridge beam for 2×8 size rafters, although it will depend on span of the beam & the amount of roof load, so it is better to consult your architect.

What size ridge beam for 2×10 rafters

for 2×10 rafters, generally we provide or use a 2×12 size ridge beam. This 2×12 size ridge beam length will be the outside measurement of the building plus the length of the overhang at both ends. Thus you can use 2×12 ridge beam for 2×10 size rafters, although it will depend on span of the beam & the amount of roof load, so it is better to consult your architect.

What size ridge beam for 2×12 rafters

for 2×12 rafters, generally we provide or use a 2×14 size ridge beam. This 2×14 size ridge beam length will be the outside measurement of the building plus the length of the overhang at both ends. Thus you can use 2×14 ridge beam for 2×12 size rafters, although it will depend on span of the beam & the amount of roof load, so it is better to consult your architect.

Conclusions:-
Generally for 2×4 rafters, you should use a 2×6 size ridge beam, for 2×6 rafters, use a 2×8 ridge beam, for 2×8 rafters, use a 2×10 ridge beam, for 2×10 rafters, use a 2×12 ridge beam, for 2×12 rafters, use a 2×14 ridge beam, and so on.
