The thickness of a concrete slab for a building depends on various factors, including the type of structure, load requirements, and local building codes. Generally:
1. One-Story Building: For residential structures, a common slab thickness is 4 inches (10 cm). Commercial or industrial buildings might require thicker slabs.
2. Two-Story Building: Residential buildings often use a slab thickness of 4 to 5 inches (10 to 12 cm). Again, commercial or industrial structures may require thicker slabs.
3. Three-Story Building: For residential, 4 to 5 inches (10 to 12 cm) might be typical. Commercial buildings could necessitate thicker slabs, and structural engineering input is crucial.
4. Four-Story Building: As the height increases, so does the need for thicker slabs. Residential might be 5 to 6 inches (12 to 15 cm), while commercial or industrial could require more.
5. Five-Story Building: For taller structures, slabs might range from 5 to 6 inches (12 to 15 cm) for residential and possibly more for commercial or industrial.
Low rise building comprises of 1 storey, 2 storey, 3 storey, 4 storey and 5 storey building. High rise building includes multi- stories like 10 storey, 20 storey and apartment.
Concrete floor slab thickness is not depending on how tall/hight of building, it’s depends on material, Engineering, load acting on it and span, need proper design, what kind of material should be used.

Determine the thickness of slab for 1/ 2/ 3/ 4/ 5 storey building, concrete floor structure first you should to figure out total load ,what kind of concrete slab you have needed, it is concentrated load or spread load all over the slab, there is a different rules for finding the thickness of slab for low rise building structure.
Construction structure concrete slab needs proper designs, grade of Steel, grade of concrete should be used to poured the concrete to make the floor slab. If you are confusing with acting load it is light medium or heavy take the help of architectural engineer better to calculate and make design of floor slab according to the load and span of floor slab.
You know that thickness of concrete floor slab depends on load acting on it and its span, whether it is concentrated load or is spread all over the slab, type of construction structure.
According to loading condition on concrete floor slab and their span, there is a choice to choose thickness of floor slab as proper design, but in this article using some basic thumb rules, regulation and guideline as per ACI code and IS code 456:2000 to find out minimum and standard thickness of concrete slab for commercial building.
Concrete slab thickness for 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 storey building
Concrete slab thickness for 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 storey building depends on material, Engineering, load acting on it and span, it need proper design, what kind of material should be used, concreting material, Steels and other materials resist environmental factor, good and sound floor slab should be needed.
Concrete slab thickness for 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 storey building :- Concrete floor slab thickness is not depending on how tall/hight of building, it’s depends on material, Engineering, load acting on it and span, need proper design, what kind of material should be used. using some basic thumb rules, regulation and guideline as per ACI code and IS code 456:2000, for concrete floor, concrete slab thickness for 1 storey (G+0)/ 2 storey (G+1)/ 3 storey (G+2)/ 4 storey (G+3)/ 5 storey (G+4)/ 6 storey (G+5)/ low rise building is kept 4 inch to 6″ (100mm to 150mm), taking minimum thickness should be 4″ (100mm), maximum thickness should be 6″ (150mm) and there is no nominal or standard thickness should be mentioned in IS code, but I recommended to use nominal or standard thickness of concrete floor slab 5 inch (125mm) thick for 1 storey (G+0)/ 2 storey (G+1)/ 3 storey (G+2)/ 4 storey (G+3)/ 5 storey (G+4)/ 6 storey (G+5)/ low rise building, providing minimum concrete grade M10 to M15 and mesh bar embedded in concrete, 2″ deep from top of floor slab.
Concrete slab thickness for apartment/high rise building:– Concrete floor slab thickness is not depending on how tall/hight of building, it’s depends on material, Engineering, load acting on it and span, need proper design, what kind of material should be used. using some basic thumb rules, regulation and guideline as per ACI code and IS code 456:2000, for concrete floor, concrete slab thickness for Apartment/ high rise building
is kept 6 inch to 8″ (150mm to 200mm), taking minimum thickness should be 6″ (150mm), maximum thickness should be 8″ (200mm) and there is no nominal or standard thickness should be mentioned in IS code, but I recommended to use nominal or standard thickness of concrete floor slab 6 inch (150mm) thick for Apartment/ high rise building, providing minimum concrete grade M10 to M15 and mesh bar embedded in concrete, 2″ deep from top of floor slab.
Concrete slab thickness for Hotel building:- Concrete floor slab thickness is not depending on how tall/ hight of building, it’s depends on material, Engineering, load acting on it and span, need proper design, what kind of material should be used. using some basic thumb rules, regulation and guideline as per ACI code and IS code 456:2000, for concrete floor, concrete slab thickness for hotel building is kept 6 inch to 8″ (150mm to 200mm), taking minimum thickness should be 6″ (150mm), maximum thickness should be 8″ (200mm) and there is no nominal or standard thickness should be mentioned in IS code, but I recommended to use nominal or standard thickness of concrete floor slab 8 inch (200mm) thick for hotel building, providing minimum concrete grade M10 to M15 and mesh bar embedded in concrete, 2″ deep from top of floor slab.
