If you want to make single or double garage for your car parking, there is a lots of questions comes in mind what is correct rough opening for garage door and how to install garage framing. There is few points you should know before framing.

Construction of your new garage is important part of house. People want to love to install garage on choice. This will be one car, 2-car garage door. There is different new style and design of garage comes in different size like 9×7, 8×7 & 10×10 for one Car parking. Some homeowners have two cars and want to need garage space to shelter for both car. The standard size of opening for double Car garage doors is 16 feet wide and 7 or 8 feet high. The standard garage door opening width and height can vary by location where you live, but it is usually: 8 feet wide by 7 or 8 feet tall, or 9 feet wide by 7 feet tall for a single car garage door.

Rough openings as the size of the opening before the finished lumber has been added to the jambs. Before you add your framing, the rough opening should be larger than the garage door you’ve chosen. Rough opening should be 3″ wider than the door width measured between the left and right edges. So, in a 12-foot wide garage door, the rough opening will be 12 foot and 3 inches wide.

The distance between the garage floor and the rough header should be one and a half inches (1-1/2″) taller than your new garage door’s height. For example, in a standard Eight-foot-tall garage door, the header should be 8′-1-1/2″ feet above the finished floor.

We refer to rough openings as the size of the opening before the finished lumber has been added to the jambs. After finishing work it will be equal as garage door opening. Ordering a garage door based on a rough opening size can leave you with a door that is too big. When referring to a rough opening, this is a garage door opening that has been framed with 2×4 lumber, but no finish work has been completed.

Garage door rough openings should be 3 inches wider than the garage door you have selected measured between left to right edges and one and half (1 1/2″) inches longer than your new garage door’s height. The header itself should be nine inches wider than the door width. If you are installing a 9 feet wide or 9’×7′ garage door, the opening width will be 9 feet 3 inches wide and opening height should be 7 feet and 1-1/2″ tall.

Garage door rough opening guide

When you want to install garage door, following points kept in mind before installing.

1) The distance between the garage floor and the rough header should be one and a half inches (1-1/2″) taller than your new garage door’s height. For example, in a standard Seven-foot-tall garage door, the header should be 7′-1-1/2″ feet above the finished floor.

2) Rough opening width should be 3 inches wider than the door width measured between the left and right edges. So, in a 9-foot wide garage door, the rough opening will be 9 foot and 3 inches wide.

3) The header itself should be nine inches wider than the door width.

How to frame a garage door opening

Frame the garage door rough opening to 3 inches wider than the door width measured between the left and right edges and one and half (1 1/2″) inches longer than your new garage door’s height.
If you are installing a 9 feet wide or 9’×7′ garage door, the opening width will be 9 feet 3 inches wide and opening height should be 7 feet and 1-1/2″ tall.

To frame a garage door into a wall you kept following process: 1) measure the rough opening width and height, opening width should be 3 inches wider than the door width and height should be 1-1/2″ taller than opening height, 2) install the head jamb, 3) install two interior side posts, 4) install the side jamb, and 5) attach the centre bracket framing.

9×7 garage door rough opening

If you are installing a 9×7 (9 feet wide and 7 feet tall) garage door, the door rough opening width will be 9 feet 3 inches wide and opening height should be 7 feet and 1-1/2″ tall. Thus, you will need rough opening of 9’ 3″ wide and 7’ 1.5″ tall for a 9’×7′ size garage door used for Single car parking.

8×7 garage door rough opening

If you are installing a 8×7 (8 feet wide and 7 feet tall) garage door, the door rough opening width will be 8 feet 3 inches wide and opening height should be 7 feet and 1-1/2″ tall. Thus, you will need rough opening of 8’ 3″ wide and 7’ 1.5″ tall for a 8’×7′ size garage door used for Single car parking.

10×10 garage door rough opening

If you are installing a 10×10 (10 feet wide and 10 feet tall) garage door, the door rough opening width will be 10 feet 3 inches wide and opening height should be 10 feet and 1-1/2″ tall. Thus, you will need rough opening of 10’ 3″ wide and 10’ 1.5″ tall for a 10’×10′ size garage door used for Single car parking.

Garage door rough openings should be 3 inches wider than the garage door you have selected, if you are installing a 9 feet wide garage door, the rough opening width will be 9′ 3″ wide.
