If you want to make single or double garage for your car parking, there is a lots of questions comes in mind what is correct rough opening for garage door and how to install garage framing. There is few points you should know before framing.

Rough openings as the size of the opening before the finished lumber has been added to the jambs. Before you add your framing, the rough opening should be larger than the garage door you’ve chosen. Rough opening should be 3″ wider than the door width measured between the left and right edges. So, in a 10-foot wide garage door, the rough opening will be 10 foot and 3 inches wide.

The distance between the garage floor and the rough header should be one and a half inches (1-1/2″) taller than your new garage door’s height. For example, in a standard Eight-foot-tall garage door, the header should be 8′-1-1/2″ feet above the finished floor.

Garage door openings

The standard garage door openings width and height can vary by where you live, but is usually 8 feet wide by 7 feet tall, or 9 feet wide by 7 feet tall for a single car garage door. 16 feet by 7 feet or 16 feet wide by 8 feet tall for a double car garage door.

Many homeowners have two cars and need garage space to shelter them both. The standard size for double garage doors is 16 to 18 feet wide and 7 to 8 feet high. Many 16 x 7 garage doors are designed with a pair of single 8-foot garage door bays. These bays are separated by a central post or column.

Garage door rough opening

Garage door rough opening should be 3 inches wider and 1-1/2″ taller than the actual width and height of garage door you have selected respectively. Header is 9 inch longer than width of garage door.

Ideal garage door rough opening should be 3 inches wider and 1-1/2″ taller than the actual width and height of garage door you have selected respectively.

We refer to rough openings as the size of the opening before the finished lumber has been added to the jambs. After finishing work it will be equal as garage door opening. Ordering a garage door based on a rough opening size can leave you with a door that is too big.

When referring to a rough opening, this is a garage door opening that has been framed with 2×4 lumber, but no finish work has been completed.

Frame the rough opening to 3 inches wider than the garage door you have selected. If you are installing a 8′ wide garage door, the rough opening will be 8’3″ wide. Once finished, the opening will be 8′ wide. The finished opening should be the same width and height as the garage door you have purchased.

Frame the rough opening to a height that is one and half inches (1- 1/2″) taller than the door that you have selected. If the door is 7 feet tall, frame the opening 7’ 1.5″.

Garage door rough opening sizes

Garage door rough opening dimensions: 1) the header itself should be nine inches wider than the door, 2) the rough opening width should be three inches longer than the door, measured between the left and right edges, and 3) header height is 1 1/2″ taller than door height. So, in a 12-foot wide garage door, the rough opening will be 12′ 3″ inches wide.

8×7 Garage door rough opening

A 8’×7′ garage door is represented as 8′ wide and 7 foot tall, so, for a 8’×7′ or 8′ by 7′ garage door, the rough opening will be 8’ 3″ wide and 7’ 3/2″ tall. Thus, you will need rough opening of 8’ 3″ wide and 7’ 3/2″ tall for a 8’×7′ size garage door used for single car parking.

10×10 Garage door rough opening

A 10’×10′ garage door is represented as 10′ wide and 10 foot tall, so, for a 10’×10′ or 10′ by 10′ garage door, the rough opening will be 10’ 3″ wide and 10’ 3/2″ tall. Thus, you will need rough opening of 10’ 3″ wide and 10’ 3/2″ tall for a 10’×10′ size garage door used for single car parking.

9×8 Garage door rough opening

A 9’×8′ garage door is represented as 9′ wide and 8 foot tall, so, for a 9’×8′ or 9′ by 8′ garage door, the rough opening will be 9’ 3″ wide and 8’ 3/2″ tall. Thus, you will need rough opening of 9’ 3″ wide and 8’ 3/2″ tall for a 9’×8′ size garage door used for single car parking.

9×7 Garage door rough opening

A 9’×7′ garage door is represented as 9′ wide and 7 foot tall, so, for a 9’×7′ or 9′ by 7′ garage door, the rough opening will be 9’ 3″ wide and 7’ 3/2″ tall. Thus, you will need rough opening of 9’ 3″ wide and 7’ 3/2″ tall for a 9’×7′ size garage door used for single car parking.

Conclusion:-

Ideal garage door rough opening should be 3 inches wider and 1-1/2″ taller than the actual width and height of garage door you have selected respectively. So, if you are installing a 9×7 garage door, the rough opening will be 9’ 3″ wide and 7’ 3/2″ tall.
