The thickness of 2, 3, and 4-ply laminated veneer lumber (LVL) beams can vary depending on the specific manufacturer and the intended application. However, I can provide you with some general guidelines:

1-Ply LVL Beam: This type of LVL beam typically has a thickness of around 1 3/4 inches (44 mm). This is the most common thickness for 1-ply LVL beams.

2-Ply LVL Beam: This type of LVL beam typically has a thickness of around 3 1/2 inches (88 mm). This is the most common thickness for 2-ply LVL beams.

3-Ply LVL Beam: A 3-ply LVL beam is often around 5 1/4 inches (132 mm) in thickness, but this can vary based on the manufacturer’s specifications and intended use.

4-Ply LVL Beam: 4-ply LVL beams are usually thicker, with a typical thickness of about 7 inches (176 mm).

Laminated veneer lumber or LVL is much look like plywood, generally made of thin sheets of wood which are sandwiched and bound with super stronger glue. It is a high-strength structural engineered wood product of recent innovation and one of the most widely used kinds of lumber in construction projects in. It is typically used for boards of all kinds, for headers, beam rim boards, skateboards, as well as beams, trusses, edge forming materials and more. It is available in a wide range of lengths, widths and thicknesses.

What is an LVL beam:- Laminated veneer lumber (LVL) is an engineered wood product that uses multiple layers of thin wood assembled with adhesives. It is typically used for headers, beams, rimboard, and edge-forming material.

Laminated veneer lumber or LVL are available in 1 ply of thickness 1 -3/4″, 2 ply lvl of thickness 3 -1/2″, 3 ply lvl of thickness 5 -1/4″ and 4 ply lvl of thickness 7 inches wide. The most common thickness of Laminated veneer lumber or LVL of 1 ply is 45 mm or 1-3/4 inches, from which wider beams can be easily constructed by fastening multiple LVL plies together on site.

The American wood Council National design specification for wood, lvl is type of structural composite lumber comparable to glued laminated timber (glulam). LVL is product of recent innovation they are result of new technology and economic pressure to make use of new wood species and smaller trees that cannot be used to make solid Lumber.

LVL is a straight, enough strong wood that fights warping and shrinking, providing great stability for your projects. Use an LVL beam to eliminate twisting and splitting for quiet floors. Because of the wood’s dimensional stability, inspection times are often reduced, too. LVL has a “maximum allowable bending stress” of 2,800 or 3,000 psi. LVL offer several advantages over technical milled lumber, it is made in factory under control specification and it is more stronger straighter and more uniform in size.

Lvl sizes may vary according to manufacturer but lvl standard thickness are 1 3/4 inches to 7 inches. It is available in thickness from 19mm (3/4 inches) to 178mm (7 inches). LVL length are generally available in 24, 28, 32, 36, 40 and 44 feet with special order upto 60 Feet. It can be customized according to your requirement. More than 60 Feet there is difficulty in transportation and handling.

LVL beam depth are typically 5 1/2 inches (140mm), 7 1/4 inches (184mm), 9 1/4 inches (235mm), 9 1/2 inches (241mm), 11 1/4 inches (286mm), 11 7/8 inches (302mm), 14 inches (356mm), 16 inches (406mm), 18 inches (457mm), 18 3/4 inches (476mm), 20 inches (508mm) and 23 7/8 inches (606mm).

In this article you know about how thick is a 2, 3 & 4 ply LVL beam, thickness of an LVL, how thick is a 2 ply LVL beam, how thick is a 3 ply LVL beam, how thick is a 4 ply LVL beam, what is a 2 ply lvl, what is a 3 ply lvl and what is a 4 ply lvl that will help you in better understanding and to figure out or estimate of lvl beam size and their depth.

How thick is a 2, 3 & 4 ply LVL beam

The most common thickness of Laminated veneer lumber or LVL is 45 mm or 1-3/4 inches, from which wider beams can be easily constructed by fastening multiple LVL plies together on site. One ply lvl means, those ply lvl which have thickness of 1- 3/4″. Width of lvl beam design a beam width based on the fact that the typical width of an LVL beam is 1- 3/4 inches. The width can be increased by laminating in multiples of 1 3/4 inches or 40mm.

Meaning and thickness of a 2 ply lvl

What is a 2 ply lvl:- 2 ply lvl means, the lvl which are made of laminating of two single ply LVL of thickness 1- 3/4″ such that 1-3/4″ + 1- 3/4″ = 3 -1/2″. Thus wider beams of 2 ply lvl can be easily constructed by fastening 2 LVL plies together on site with super stronger glue.

How thick is a 2 ply lvl:- thickness of a 2 ply lvl beam is 90mm or 3 -1/2 inches, which are made of fastening 2 LVL plies of thickness 1- 3/4″ such that 1-3/4″ + 1- 3/4″ = 3 -1/2″, together on site with super stronger glue. It is generally used for Construction application in commercial and residential structure including beams, truss chords, floor beams, purlins, hip & valley rafter, lintel, studs and header.

Meaning and thickness of a 3 ply lvl

What is a 3 ply lvl:- 3 ply lvl means, the lvl which are made of laminating of 3 single ply LVL of thickness 1- 3/4″ such that 1-3/4″ + 1- 3/4″ + 1 -3/4″ = 5 -1/4″ or 1 two ply LVL of thickness 3- 1/2″ and 1 ply (1 -3/4″) such that 3-1/2″ + 1- 3/4″ = 5 -1/4″. Thus wider beams of 3 ply lvl (5-1/4″) can be easily constructed by fastening 2 LVL plies (2ply 3-1/2″+ 1ply 1-3/4″) or 3 ply of 1-3/4″ thickness together on site with super stronger glue.

How thick is a 3 ply lvl:- thickness of a 3 ply lvl beam is 135mm or 5 -1/4 inches, which are made of fastening 3 LVL plies of thickness 1- 3/4″ such that 1-3/4″ + 1- 3/4″ + 1-3/4″= 5 -1/4″ together on site with super stronger glue. It is generally used for Construction application in commercial and residential structure including beams, truss chords, floor beams, purlins, hip & valley rafter, lintel, studs and header.

Meaning and thickness of a 4 ply lvl

What is a 4 ply lvl:- 4 ply lvl means, the lvl which are made of laminating of 4 single ply LVL of thickness 1- 3/4″ such that 1-3/4″ + 1- 3/4″ + 1 -3/4″ + 1-3/4″ = 7″ wide or 2 two ply LVL of thickness 3- 1/2″ + 3-1/2″ = 7″ or 1 three ply LVL 5- 1/4″ and 1 ply (1-3/4″) such that 5 -1/4″ + 1-3/4″ = 7″. Thus wider beams of 4 ply lvl (7 inches wide) can be easily constructed by fastening 2 LVL plies ( 3-1/2″+ 3-1/2″) thickness together on site with super stronger glue.
