There is different shape and size of A rolled steel joist (RSJ), hot rolled Steel section such as H beam (universal column), I beam (universal beam), angles, channels and etc are used in construction project such as field of agriculture construction, industrial construction, multi storey building, different factories and residential projects.
Today is the demand of steel structure in the field of construction projects that replace the depending on reinforced cement concrete, their higher strength, less time consuming, make it ideal for residential project in short duration.
RSJs are produced by being rolled from a single piece of structural steel of grade S275JR grade to maintain structural integrity and are used to support walls and floors when making an opening in a load bearing wall or when building an extension. These steel beams have good machinability, corrosion resistance, and weldability properties.
The univerasal RSJ steel beam sizes represented by their height of the web in mm x width of the flange in mm x the weight per metre in kilograms. When you measure the height and width it look like as capital I, hence also being known as I beam. The thickness of the web and flange can varies.
The web of RSJ universal steel beam helps to resists shear forces, whilst the flanges resist the larger part of the bending moment placed on the RSJ beam. They are also used to make retaining walls in landscape gardening with wooden sleepers placed between them, and to construct the frames of modern office blocks and industrial warehouses.
RSJ steel beam also known as Universal Beams, I-beam, UBs, I section, RSJs, rsj beams, h beam, steel lintels steel girder and load bearing steels. Universal beams are essential for any major support or structural integrity in building construction. These steel beams are hard-wearing and strong.
RSJ or Rolled steel joists are very popular in the building trade in UK, US, Australia, Canada and others countries used mainly for steel lintels. Small medium and large scale structural steel projects all use a variety of steel sections such as I beams, H columns and pfc channels.
In this article you know about RSJ steel beam size for 3m, 4m, 5m, 6m, 7m, 8m, 9m and 10m span according to thumb rule for the construction of house that will help you in better understanding and to figure out or estimate of RSJ beam size and their depth and help in important for you to use the right size.
RSJ Steel beam size depend on various factors, how high is the building or projects?, what is the dead and live load of structure, grade of Steel used, span between the two column and others factors.
Variation among the universal beam include material, length of the web and depth of flanges. Different weight loads and area will require different measurement on the beam, the longer the web, the more force it can stand up and down, the wider of flange, the more side to side movement the Beam can withstand. Wide flange beam are also known as W- beam.

RSJ steel beam size for 3m, 4m, 5m, 6m, 7m, 8m, 9m and 10m span
As per general experience and thumb rule, to calculate the required and necessary depth of beam, divide the span length in mm by 18 to 20 such as span length in mm/ depth = 18 to 20 for primary beam and for secondary beam span length to depth ratio is about 15 to 18. The width of this beam would be 1/3 and 1/2 of the depth. The dimensions of a Girder would be same, but the flange would be thicker. A beam overhang can be maximum of 3/8 of the supported span.
RSJ steel span rule of thumb:- depth of the RSJ are in the range of 1/2″ for each foot spanp, represented as L/24. Thumb rule for depth of roof beam or roof joist = 0.5 × span in inches, depth of floor beam or floor joist = 0.6 × span in inches and depth of composite beam = 0.55 × span in inches.
