Foundation of footings are main important part of your building structure. They are typically made of concrete with embedded rebar (reinforcement bar) that has been poured into an excavated trench. The purpose of footings is to support the foundation and prevent settling.

Ultimately, all the overall load of your building structure coming to foundation, from Foundation it safely goes to different bed of soil, to prevent from settling or structure failure, you will need strong foundation of footings. The common questions comes in mind, “what size or diameter of reinforcement bar is most suitable for your footings of G+1, G+2 & G+4 building, some people are confusing use of rebar. Generally we use reinforcement bar size 10mm (#3), 12mm (#4), 16mm (#5) and 20mm (#6) for mesh bar of strong footings.

Generally foundation of footing for G+0, G+1, G+2 & G+4 building is layout by reinforcement concrete in which mesh bar those consists of main reinforcement and distribution reinforcement embedded in concrete increase the tensile strength of concrete.

As concrete structure is made by blended mix of Portland cement, sand, gravel and water in required proportion to achieve their targeted compressive strength, it is good in compression but weak in tension, for increasing the tensile strength of concrete the reinforcement bar embedded in it, if concrete is reinforced with steel that is known as reinforced cement concrete.

As we know that different countries in the world have their own gradation, specification of Steel and record of measurement for reinforcing bar. First remember that rebar is measured differentially in United States and Europe. while the United states, it uses the US customary measurement system. In United Kingdom measurement based on Imperial and metric system and most of rest of world uses the metric system.

Rebar is short form of reinforcing bar or Steel reinforcement, it is steel bar or Steel reinforcement provided as tension bar, used in reinforced concrete structure like footing, foundation, column, beam and slab of house construction and it also used in reinforced masonry structure like retaining wall and load bearing wall. It is used to increase the tensile strength of concrete structure.

In this article you know about reinforcement bar or iron rod size (diameter) for footing of G+0, G+1, G+2 & G+4 building. This will help to viewers in better understanding and it is easy to choose the most suitable rebar you wanted according to requirement.

Steel reinforcement size for footing of G+0, G+1, G+2 & G+4 building

In United States, according to Imperial and US customary measurement system, generally we use number 3 (#3), #4, #5 to number 6 (#6) or diameter of 3/8 inch to 3/4 inch steel reinforcement bar for footings of 1st floor (G+0), 2nd floor (G+1), 3rd floor (G+2) & 4rth floor (G+4) building.

In india, according to metric system, generally we use 10mm, 12mm to 16mm size or diameter of steel reinforcement bar for footings of 1st floor (G+0), 2nd floor (G+1), 3rd floor (G+2) & 4rth floor (G+4) building.

Using thumb rule, generally, 10mm or #3 diameter of rebar at spacing of 6″ C/C (T10@6″C/C of Fe500) used for footing of one story (G+0) building, 12mm or #4 (T12@6″C/C of Fe500) for two story (G+1) & three story (G+2) and 16mm or #5 (T16@6″C/C of Fe500) diameter of rebar used for footing of four story (G+3) building.

Steel reinforcement bar size for footing of G+0/ 1st floor building:- we will assume a structure of G+0 (one storey) residential building, using standard 4″ thick walls, according to general thumb rule, use of mesh bar of 10mm or number 3 (#3) size (diameter) of steel reinforcement as main and distribution bar (T10@6″C/C of Fe500) is most suitable for strong footing, for isolated footing size of depth should be minimum 3 to 4 feet in trapezoidal shape and using with m20 grade of concrete with clear cover of 50mm. Thus, most suitable diameter of 10mm (#3) rebar (steel reinforcement) used for footing of one storey/ 1st floor/ G+0 residential buildings.

Steel reinforcement bar size for footing of G+1/ 2nd floor building:- we will assume a structure of G+1 (two storey) residential building, using standard 4″ thick walls, according to general thumb rule, use of mesh bar of 12mm or number 4 (#4) size (diameter) of steel reinforcement as main and distribution bar (T12@6″C/C of Fe500) is most suitable for strong footing, for isolated footing size of depth should be minimum 4 to 5 feet in trapezoidal shape and using with m20 grade of concrete with clear cover of 50mm. Thus, most suitable diameter of 12mm (#4) rebar (steel reinforcement) used for footing of two storey/ 2st floor/ G+1 residential buildings.

Steel reinforcement bar size for footing of G+2/ 3rd floor building:- we will assume a structure of G+2 (three storey) residential building, using standard 4″ thick walls, according to general thumb rule, use of mesh bar of 12mm or number 4 (#4) size (diameter) of steel reinforcement as main and distribution bar (T12@6″C/C of Fe500) is most suitable for strong footing, for isolated footing size of depth should be minimum 5 to 6 feet in trapezoidal shape and using with m20 grade of concrete with clear cover of 50mm. Thus, most suitable diameter of 12mm (#4) rebar (steel reinforcement) used for footing of three storey/ 3rd floor/ G+2 residential buildings.

Steel reinforcement bar size for footing of G+3/ 4rth floor building:- we will assume a structure of G+3 (four storey) residential building, using standard 4″ thick walls, according to general thumb rule, use of mesh bar of 16mm or number 5 (#5) size (diameter) of steel reinforcement as main and distribution bar (T16@6″C/C of Fe500) is most suitable for strong footing, for isolated footing size of depth should be minimum 6 to 7 feet in trapezoidal shape and using with m20 grade of concrete with clear cover of 50mm. Thus, most suitable diameter of 16mm (#5) rebar (steel reinforcement) used for footing of four storey/ 4rth floor/ G+3 residential buildings.
