Column beam and slab are load bearing structure of building, provided with good amount of concreting material with steel/reinforcement bar phone increasing their strength yet it resist all type of load axial load and Lateral load acting on structure.

What are the minimum and maximum diameter of bar used in slab, beam and column

There are different grade of Steel and diameter are available in market and manufactured by various manufacturing company. The diameter of reinforcement bar life 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 16mm, 20mm, 25mm, 32mm, 40mm, etc are available in market and supplied by supplier different company like Tata, Jindal, etc.

There is a confusion between the people what is minimum and maximum diameter of reinforecement bar needed for RCC slab, beam and column. But there is some Thumb Rule and basic law of rule and guideline IS code 456:2000 suggesting what are the minimum and maximum diameter of bar used in RCC slab,beam and column.

What are the minimum and maximum diameter of bar used in slab

Actual minimum and maximum quantity of reinforcement bar and their diameter and number used in rcc slab according to design, whether it will be flat slab, one way slab and two way slab, span and length of slab, live load etc. But there is some Thumb Rule and basic law of rule and guideline IS code 456:2000 suggesting what are the minimum and maximum diameter of bar used in RCC slab.

What is the minimum diameter of reinforcement/ bar used in slab as per IS 456: 2000:- there are two types of reinforcement/ bar provided in RCC slab, 1) main bar provided in tension zone of RCC slab and 2) distribution bar provided in compression zone. As per IS 456:2000, in rcc slab, minimum diameter of main bar should not be less than 8mm (highly yield strength deform bar HYSD) or 10mm (plain bar) and distribution bar should not less than 8mm.

What is the maximum diameter of reinforcement/ bar used in slab as per IS 456: 2000:- there are two types of reinforcement/ bar provided in RCC slab, 1) main bar provided in tension zone of RCC slab and 2) distribution bar provided in compression zone. As per IS 456:2000, in rcc slab, maximum diameter of main bar and distribution bar should not exceed 1/8th thickness of slab.

In general we use 5 inch (125mm) thick slab, if thickness of slab is 125mm,then maximum diameter of bar used in slab is 125/8 which is equal to 16mm. So maximum diameter of reinforcement bar used in 5 inch (125mm) thick RCC slab is 16mm (5 soot).

if thickness of slab is 4 inch (100mm),then maximum diameter of bar used in rcc slab is 100/8 which is equal to 12mm. So maximum diameter of reinforcement bar used in 4 inch (100mm) thick RCC slab is 16mm (5 soot).

if thickness of slab is 6 inch (150mm),then maximum diameter of bar used in rcc slab is 150/8 which is equal to 18.75mm. 18.75mm bar not available, So maximum diameter of reinforcement bar used in 6 inch (150mm) thick RCC slab is 20mm (6 soot).

In practical, minimum diameter of 10mm (HYSD) Steel bar as main bar and 8mm (HYSD) steel bar as distribution bar used in RCC slab for light weight structure, maximum diameter of 16mm (HYSD) Steel bar as main bar and 12mm (HYSD) steel bar as distribution bar used in RCC slab for heavy weight structure like parking, garage in building.

Actual minimum and maximum quantity of reinforcement bar and their diameter and number used in rcc slab according to design, whether it will be flat slab, one way slab and two way slab, span and length of slab, live load etc.

Actual minimum and maximum quantity of reinforcement bar and their diameter and number used in rcc beam is calculated according to design, beam self load, span between two support, load acting on beam, whether it is plinth beam, tie beam, primary Beam or secondary beam etc. But there is some Thumb Rule and basic law of rule and guideline IS code 456:2000 suggesting what are the minimum and maximum diameter of bar used in RCC beam.

Beam is flexural member of concrete fibre experiences bending moment, tension zone in bottom portion provided with higher dia and more Quantity of Steel to resist structure load. Compression zone in top portion provided with comparatively lesser dia and less Quantity of Steel to overcome support frame.
