What is the tension and compression zone in beam

What is the tension and compression zone in beam in this topic we discuss about what is the tension zone and compression zone in a beam. We know that beam is horizontal RCC structure in building made of reinforcement with concrete mortar which generally transfer load acting on it by the slab to the column.

And also know that beam have many types like simply supported beam ,continuous beam and cantilever beam. In this topic we detail about tension zone and compression zone in simply supported beam and cantilever beam.

We know that simply supported beam have two vertical support of column at each end and cantilever beam have one vertical support of column at one end and second end is free.

"What

Tension zone and compression zone in simply supported beam

We know that simply supported beam have two vertical support of column and anchored at both end. When load is acting on beam in downward direction we can see image how beam can bend. Due to bending moment bottom portion of the beam is pulled asside causing tension in the bottom portion that known as tension Zone Of The Beam

and the at the same time upper portion of the beam is compressed and pulled inside causing compression in the upper portion of the beam that’s known as compression zone of the beam.

What is sagging in simply supported beam

The bending moment which causes beam to bend with upward concave face is known as sagging and that is positive bending moment. And there is neutral axis between compression zone and tension zone.

What is compression zone in simply supported beam

The part of concave face of beam that lies above the neutral axis and shortens compared to neutral axis is therefore called as compression zone

What is tension zone in simply supported beam?

and the part of concave face of beam which lies below the neutral axis and has to elongate compared to neutral axis therefore is called as tension zone.

Tension zone and compression zone in cantilever beam

We know that cantilever beam have one vertical support of column and anchored at one end and second end is free. When load is acting on beam in downward direction we can see image how beam can bend. "What

What is Hogging in cantilever beam?

The bending moment which causes beam to bend with downward concave face is known as Hogging and that is negative bending moment. And there is neutral axis between compression zone and tension zone.

What is compression zone in cantilever beam?

The part of concave face of beam that lies below the neutral axis and shortens compared to neutral axis is therefore called as compression zone

What is tension zone in cantilever beam?

the part of concave face of beam which lies upward to the neutral axis and has to elongate compared to neutral axis therefore is called as tension zone.

Reinforcement provided in tension zone and compression zone of beam

We know that there is a higher bending moment and weak concrete in tension zone of beam so higher dimension of reinforcement and there quantity is provided in tension Zone Of The Beam and there is lower bending moment and strong concrete present in compression zone of beam so lesser dimension of reinforcement and medium quantity of steel is provided in compression zone of beam.

simply supported beam reinforcement

For simply supported beam we should provide less quantity of reinforcement in upper part of beam in compression zone and should provide higher quantity of reinforcement in lower part of beam in tension zone.

reinforcement for cantilever beam

for cantilever beam higher quantity of reinforcement provided in upper part of beam that is tension zone and low quantity of reinforcement provided in lower part of beam that is compression zone

●Conclusion :- tension zone and compression zone for simply supported beams is opposite to cantilever beams
