Sand calculation | how much sand do I need

The amount of sand you need depends on the specific project or application. To calculate the amount of sand required, you’ll need to know the dimensions of the area you want to fill with sand (length, width, and depth). Once you have these measurements, you can use the following formula: Volume = Length x Width x Depth.

For example, if you want to fill a rectangular area that is 10 feet long, 5 feet wide, and you want the sand to be 0.5 feet deep, the calculation would be: Volume = 10 ft x 5 ft x 0.5 ft = 25 cubic feet.

Sand or fine aggregate is one of the most important building material required in every civil construction work, its required for fill the excavation area, used as backfills, required for preparing the concrete mix, useful in plastering, flooring, blockwork and brickwork, used in mortar mix, mortar mix for tiles laying, mix for rendering, and etc.

Generally sand quantity measured in volume and their mass, volume of sand based on Imperial or US customary measurement system measured in cubic yard, cubic feet and cubic inch, and based on metric system and Indian Standard measured in cubic metre, cft and brass. Mass of sand generally measured in kilograms, pounds and tons.

Sand is a granular material composed of finely divided fragments of sedimentary, Metamorphic and igneous rock with mineral particles. Particle size of sand ranging from 0.05mm to 2mm, their grain particles are smaller than gravel and coarser than silt.

Rocks eroded or weather over a long period of time mainly by water, wind, alkaline and acidic effect. Their eroded parts or sediment transported along the downstream, it sediments even broken into a smaller pieces and till they become a fine grain of sand.

Sand is collected along the river Basin as river sand, along the shoreline as beach sand, bank of ocean as marine sand and in the flood plain area. The sand collected from river, beach, ocean are ideal for construction work and it is highly demanded for concreting work. There is a plenty full of sand present in desert areas but this sand is not ideal for construction.

Marine sand comes from sediments or particles of grains transported into the ocean and the erosion of ocean rocks, Europe is the main miners of marine sand.

During the estimating sand and crushed stone quantity for your construction work, prepairing of concrete mortar, you can do sand calculation to know about how much sand do i need and how much sand in truck you can load.

Weight of sand depends on the rocks type, loose and dense condition, compact, moisture content, dry and wet condition, river sand, beach sand and washed sand others inorganic mixed in the sand. In general, for estimating sand material purpose, contractor’s and Builder’s yields their weight to be 2700 lb/yd3 or 1.35 short tons per yard, 100 lb/ CF, or 1600kg/m3.

Yards of sand calculation formula

A cubic yard of sand, which visually is 3 feet long by 3 feet wide and by 3 feet height, which is equal as 27 cubic feet when multiply length by width by height= 3’×3’×3′ = 27 cubic feet.

Yards of sand calculation formula:- multiply the length by the width to determine square footage. Convert the thickness from inches to feet. Multiply the thickness in feet by the square footage to determine cubic feet. Convert cubic feet to cubic yards by multiplying by 0.037. This is dirt calculation formula.

Cubic feet of sand calculation formula = Length (in ft) × Width (in ft) × Height (in ft)

Cubic yards of sand calculation formula = Cubic feet of sand × 0.037, or Cubic feet of sand ÷ 27.

Tons of sand calculation formula = Cubic yards of sand × 1.35.

How to calculate yards of sand for excavation

To calculate amount of yards of sand for excavation:- measure the all dimensions of excavation in feet, then multiply length by width to get square footage, and then square footage multiply by thickness in feet, and multiply the resulting number by 0.037 to find cubic yards of sand.

For example:- if your excavation is 8 foot long by 4 foot wide by 2 feet high, you do the following calculation:- 1) sand quantity in cubic feet = 8’×4’×2′ = 64 cubic feet, 3) sand quantity in yards = 64× 0.037 = 2.368 yards, and 3) sand quantity in tons = 2.368×1.35 = 3.2 tons. Thus, you will need 2.368 cubic yards (64 cubic feet or 3.2 tons) of sand to fill 8’×4’×2′ dimensions of excavation.

The volume of sand needed is equal to the volume of excavation or backfill you need to fill, so you will need about 64 cubic feet or 2.368 cubic yards of sand to fill 8′ × 4′ × 2′ dimension of your excavation or backfill.

How to figure yards of sand

To figure amount of yards of sand:- measure the all dimensions of cuboidal box in feet, then multiply length by width to get square footage, and then square footage multiply by thickness in feet to get cubic feet, and multiply the resulting number by 0.037 to find cubic yards of sand.

Cubic yards of sand calculation formula = Cubic feet of sand × 0.037, or Cubic feet of Sand ÷ 27.

To figure yards of sand required to fill a box of dimensions 4’×2’×2.5′ in following steps:- 1) sand quantity in cubic feet = 4’×2’×2.5′ = 20 cubic feet, 3) sand quantity in yards = 20× 0.037 = 0.74 yards, and 3) sand quantity in tons = 0.74×1.35 = 1 ton approximately.

To fill a box with a width of 2 feet and a length of 4 feet, to a depth of 2.5 feet, you will need 20 cubic feet, or 0.74 cubic yards, or 1 ton of sand approximately.
