Roadway width in india as per IRC

The Indian Roads Congress (IRC) provides guidelines for roadway design in India. The recommended roadway width can vary depending on factors like the type of road, traffic volume, and location. Here are some general guidelines:

1. National Highways: The minimum recommended carriageway width for a four-lane divided highway is typically around 10.5 meters (34.4 feet). This can vary based on specific project requirements.

2. State Highways: The recommended width for state highways can vary but is generally in the range of 7 to 10 meters depending on factors like traffic volume and terrain.

3. Urban Roads: The recommended width for urban roads can vary from 7 meters for local streets to wider widths for arterial roads.

There is several kinds of Road in world constructed by central and state government in urban and rural areas, such as National Highway (NH), state highway (SH), MDR (major district road), ODR (other District road) and village road (VR). It will be constructed in plain or mountainous steep & hilly area. Generally National Highway constructed by Central Government of consists of 2 Lane, 3 Lane, 4 lane and 6 Lane Road. State highway, MDR, ODR and village road constructed by State Government consist of single lane, 2 Lane, 3 Lane and 4 lane road.

In india Road construction department have set up Indian Road Congress (IRC). The Indian Roads Congress (IRC) is the Apex Body of Highway Engineers in the country give the guidelines, rule and regulation of several kinds of roads contraction. It is updated several times with new guidelines. In India, all matters related to Geometric design and structure are handle according to to IRC (Indian Road Congress).

The main component of the highway or Expressway are roadway width, shoulder, road margin, traffic separator and kerbs. The area of the land that required for the road along its alignment is termed as right of way.

Roadway is defined as the built up area of road intended for vehicles or the part of bridge/ Railway used by traffic. It is measured distance between shoulder to shoulder. It is used for transportation of goods and Personnel from one place to others.

The width of roadway or Roadways width is equal to sum of the width of carriageway or pavement (including separators if any) and width of shoulder at both sides. Hence roadway width = carriageway width + 2(shoulder width).

The paved portion of Highway or Road over which the traffic is meant to move is called the pavement or carriageway. The pavement width is depend on the width of traffic Lane and number of lanes planned for construction. Generally width of carriageway is 3.75m for single Lane traffic and 7m wide for 2 lane traffic, so each lane require minimum width of 3.5m.

Shoulder are provided along the road edge and on intended for accommodation of stop vehicles, serve as an emergency lane for vehicles and provide lateral support. Shoulder should be strong enough to bear the weight of fully loaded truck even in wet condition. Shoulder width should be required for giving working space. It is used during crossing and overtaking.

Shoulder width of road in india is per IRC:- in india, as per the rules & guidelines of Indian Road Congress (IRC), ideal and standard shoulder width of road should be 4.6 m and minimum is about 2.5 m wide at both sides along the edge of road. Shoulder width of road is 4.125m wide prescribed for NH/ SH, of single lane pavement and for 2 lane it should be 2.5m wide. For village road this is 2.25m wide.

Roadway width in india is per IRC:- in india, as per the rules & guidelines of Indian Road Congress (IRC), ideal and standard width of roadway for National and state highway should be 12 metre wide and minimum is about 9 meter wide for major district road (MDR), 7.5 meter wide for others district (ODRs ) and village road (VR). This is ideal, desirable and standard width of roadway in india.

As per Indian Road Congress, the standard  width of the road for National and State Highway is 12 meters (40 feet), the minimum road width is taken as 9 meters (30 feet) for Major District Roads, and for Other District Road and Village Road, the minimum width is 7.5 meters (25 feet).

Roadway width for National Highway:- in india, as per the rules & guidelines of Indian Road Congress (IRC), ideal and standard width of roadway for National and state highway should be 12 metre wide. This includes width of 3.75m for carriageway and 4.125m for shoulder at both sides of single lane traffic. Roadway width is calculated as follow:-

● Highway roadway width for single lane in plain area = 3.75m + 2 × 4.125 = 12m

● Highway roadway width for single lane in mountainous steep area = 3.75m + 2 × 1.25 = 6.25 meter.

● Highway roadway width for 2 lane in plain area = 3.5m × 2 + 2 × 2.5 = 12m

● Highway roadway width for 2 lane in mountainous steep area = 3.5m ×2 + 2 × 0.90m = 8.8 meter.

Roadway width for MDR:- in india, as per the rules & guidelines of Indian Road Congress (IRC), ideal and standard width of roadway for major district road (MDR) should be 9 metre wide. This includes width of 3.75m for carriageway and 2.625m for shoulder at both sides of single lane traffic. Roadway width is calculated as follow:-

● MDR roadway width for single lane in plain area = 3.75m + 2 × 2.625 = 9m

● MDR roadway width for single lane in mountainous steep area = 3.75m + 2 × 0.5 = 4.75 meter.

Roadway width for ODRs:- in india, as per the rules & guidelines of Indian Road Congress (IRC), ideal and standard width of roadway for others district road (ODRs) should be 7.5 metre wide for single lane and 9m wide for 2 lane traffic. This includes width of 3.75m for carriageway and 1.875m for shoulder at both sides of single lane traffic. Roadway width is calculated as follow:-

● ODR roadway width for single lane in plain area = 3.75m + 2 × 1.875m = 7.5m

● ODR roadway width for single lane in mountainous steep area = 3.75m + 2 × 0.5 = 4.75 meter.

Roadway width for VR:- in india, as per the rules & guidelines of Indian Road Congress (IRC), ideal and standard width of roadway for village road (VR) should be 7.5 metre wide for single lane. This includes width of 3m for carriageway and 2.25m for shoulder at both sides of single lane traffic. Roadway width is calculated as follow:-

● VR roadway width for single lane in plain area = 3m + 2 × 2.25m = 7.5m

● VR roadway width for single lane in mountainous steep area = 3m + 2 × 0.5 = 4 meter.
