There is different shape and size of hot rolled Steel section such as H beam (universal column), I beam (universal beam), angles, channels and etc are used in construction project such as field of agriculture construction, industrial construction, multi storey building, different factories and residential projects. Today is the demand of steel structure in the field of construction projects that replace the depending on reinforced cement concrete, their higher strength, less time consuming, make it ideal for residential project in short duration.
Steel beam is also known as Universal beam or UB’s or I beam or H beam, W beam, rolled steel joist (rsj), double T due to their shape. Steel beam are very versatile and can be used in various structural Steel construction project. It is consist of two horizontal plates known as flanges connected by vertical component known as web. Generally depth of Universal beam or steel beam is greater than their width which makes them suitable for beam application where strength needs to be in one of direction. Which is the most often used section for structural Steel purpose.
A rolled steel joist (RSJ) is a common type of beam used for structural steelwork. It is also known as an ‘I-beam’. Rolled steel joist (srj) are usually made from mild steel but can also be formed from aluminium or other materials.
Steel beam or universal beam are extremely effective for use as structural Steel. they provide the maximum amount of strength for the volume of Steel used in making them the most efficient method of carrying bending and shear loads. In this artical you know about Steel beam size for 3m, 4m, 5m, 6m, 8m and 10m span according to Thumb Rule and experience basis.
Steel beam size depend on various factors, how high is the building or projects?, what is the dead and live load of structure, grade of Steel used, span between the two column, others factors. Generally ISMB100 or UB100×75, ISMB150 or UB150×75, ISMB200 or UB200×100, ISMB100 or UB250×125, ISMB300 or UB300×140, ISMB350 or UB300×140, ISMB400 or UB400×140, ISMB450 or UB450×150, ISMB500 or UB500×180, ISMB550 or UB550×190 and ISMB600 or UB600×210 steel beam are used in construction industries. Generally Steel beam size represented by dimensions of web × flange × weight per unit length, measured in mm or inch such as size of steel beam ismb150 represented as 150 × 75 or 6″×3″, where 150mm is depth of steel beam, 75mm is their flange width.
Variation among the universal beam include material, length of the web and depth of flanges. Different weight loads and area will require different measurement on the beam, the longer the web, the more force it can stand up and down, the wider of flange, the more side to side movement the Beam can withstand. Wide flange beam are also known as W- beam.
Steel beam size for 3m, 4m, 5m, 6m, 7m, 8m & 10m span
Structure steel is a versatile building material, though it can be used in great variety of ways. The most economic span range for conventional steel floor and roof framing is from 20 to 32 feet (6 to 10m).
Steel beam span rule of thumb:- as per general experience and thumb rule, to calculate the required and necessary depth of beam, divide the span length in mm by 18 to 20 such as span length in mm/ depth = 18 to 20 for primary beam and for secondary beam span length to depth ratio is about 15 to 18. The width of this beam would be 1/3 and 1/2 of the depth. The dimensions of a Girder would be same, but the flange would be thicker. A beam overhang can be maximum of 3/8 of the supported span.
Steel beam or rsj size for 3m span:- as per general thumb rule, for 3m span size of steel beam or universal beam or w beam or I beam or UB’s or hot rolled section or Rolled steel section (rsj) should be ISMB 150 or UB 150×75 used for residential building or projects or construction in which depth of section of beam is 150mm (6″) and width of flange or width of beam is 75mm (3″). This is standard and most suitable size of steel beam used for 3m span under normal load condition. Mathematical calculation such as depth of steel beam = 3× 1000mm/20 = 150mm or 6″ and width of beam = depth/2 = 150mm/2 = 75mm.
Steel beam or rsj size for 4m span:- as per general thumb rule, for 4m span size of steel beam or universal beam or w beam or I beam or UB’s or hot rolled section or Rolled steel section (rsj) should be ISMB 200 or UB 200×100 used for residential building or projects or construction in which depth of section of beam is 200mm (8″) and width of flange or width of beam is 100mm (4″). This is standard and most suitable size of steel beam used for 4m span under normal load condition. Mathematical calculation such as depth of steel beam = 4× 1000mm/20 = 200mm or 8″ and width of beam = depth/2 = 200mm/2 = 100mm.
Steel beam or rsj size for 5m span:- as per general thumb rule, for 5m span size of steel beam or universal beam or w beam or I beam or UB’s or hot rolled section or Rolled steel section (rsj) should be ISMB 250 or UB 250×125 used for residential building or projects or construction in which depth of section of beam is 250mm (10″) and width of flange or width of beam is 125mm (5″). This is standard and most suitable size of steel beam used for 5m span under normal load condition. Mathematical calculation such as depth of steel beam = 5× 1000mm/20 = 250mm or 10″ and width of beam = depth/2 = 250mm/2 = 125mm.
Steel beam or rsj size for 6m span:- as per general thumb rule, for 6m span size of steel beam or universal beam or w beam or I beam or UB’s or hot rolled section or Rolled steel section (rsj) should be ISMB 300 or UB 300×140 used for residential building or projects or construction in which depth of section of beam is 300mm (12″) and width of flange or width of beam is 140mm. This is standard and most suitable size of steel beam used for 6m span under normal load condition. Mathematical calculation such as depth of steel beam = 6× 1000mm/20 = 300mm or 12″ and width of beam = depth/2 = 300mm/2 = 150mm, but 140mm flange width is used.
