There is several kinds of Road in india constructed by central and state government in urban and rural areas, such as National Highway (NH), state highway (SH), MDR (major district road), ODR (other District road) and village road (VR). It will be constructed in plain or mountainous steep & hilly area.
In this article we know about width of village or rural Road as per IRC and also we study about roadway, shoulder and carriageway width for single Lane pavement in rural village area as per IRC rules and guidelines.
Width of village road consist of carriageway width along with margin width. Width of margin comprises width of pavement shoulder and unpaved shoulder. A carriageway generally consists of a number of traffic lanes together with any associated shoulder. Road margin is the portion of road beyond the carriageway.
Village road width in India as per IRC
Village road width as per IRC:- In India, as per IRC rules and guidelines, the standard width of village roads is approximately 3 meters prescribed and 3.75 meters for PWD or ODRs. There is very low traffic expected on the village or rural Road, a single lane of pavement is sufficient for traffic. The current standard for width of a single Lane road in rural areas in India is 3.75m. In any case, when local traffic condition demand in rural Road, the width of pavement can be marginally widened.
PWD village road width:- In India, the standard width of PWD village (rural) roads or gram panchayat road width is approximately 3.75 meters (12 feet) as per IRC rules and guidelines.
Roadway width for village road:- in India, as per IRC rules and guidelines, the current standard for roadway width for village road and other District road is about 7.5m wide. These includes width of carriageway about 3 metre and Shoulder width about 2.25m wide at both side. Roadway width is sum of width of carriageway and Shoulder width along with unpaved shoulder. So width of roadway for village road = carriageway width + shoulder width (3m + 2 × 2.25m = 7.5m).

Shoulder width for village road:- in india, as per the guidelines of Indian Road Congress (IRC) for village/ rural Road, width of the shoulder is range between 0.5 m to 2.25 m wide on both sides depending on certain condition such as elevation of soil surface, plain, mountainous, steep or hilly areas. In plain area for village road it is prescribed 2.25m wide at both sides and for mountainous steep or hilly areas it is about 0.5m wide. This shoulder width increase the width of road to be used during crossing and overtaking.
