In US, Canada, UK and many European countries of cold region, construction of wooden frame house is most popular. In wooden frame house construction one of the most important finishing material used is drywall construction to face the interior walls of dwellings and other buildings. Others materials used are Wall studs, joist, rafter, header, bottom plate, top plate, siding and roof. Drywall construction is the application of wall without the use of cement mortar or rendering.
Drywall is also called as gypsum board, plasterboard, dry lining, wallboard, sheet rock, buster board, custard board, and gypsum panel which is made from gypsum panel sheets of calcium sulfate dihydrate, with or without additives, comes in large rigid sheets used in the construction of interior wall.
Drywall is a construction material used to create finishing of walls and ceilings. It replace the use of cement, mortar and bricks. It is sound proof, corrosion resistant, durable, fire free gypsum panel sheet. It is also used to create many design features, including eaves, arches and other architectural specialties. It’s quick and easy to install, incredibly durable, and requires only simple repairs when damaged.
In this article article we know about how do you calculate drywall square footage. There are many size of drywall comes like 4 ft by 8 ft (4×8), 4 ft by 10 ft (4×10), 4 ft by 12 ft (4×12), 4 ft by 14 ft (4×14), or 4 ft by 16 ft (4×16). You can calculate drywall square footage by multiplying its length and width.
Drywall comes in many vary thickness and sizes for different projects. It is generally 4 feet (48″) wide and 8, 10, 12, 14, or 16 feet long. Their thickness are, 1/4″, 3/8″, 1/2″, or 5/8″. But standard and most common size of drywall is 4 feet wide and 8 feet in length of 1/2″ thick used for majority of residential building.
1/4″ thick drywall is ideal for creating curved wall or creating new surfaces over plaster. It is economical option for you. 3/8″ thickness of drywall is perfect for remodeling of partition wall and this can be also used for where the plaster has worn off. 1/2″ thickness of drywall is standard thickness to create walls and ceiling. 5/8″ thickness of drywall used for commercial application where soundproofing is necessary, it is also refers as firewall drywall.

How do you calculate drywall square footage
To calculate the square footage of a room for drywall, multiply the width and the height of each wall and ceiling to get area in square feet, then add together all wall and ceiling area to get a total square-foot amount. This is the total square footage of your drywall you have needed.
How much drywall panels do you need, divide the total drywall square footage by drywall panel square footage. If you use 4 ft by 8 ft panel has 32 square feet, divide it by 32, by this you can get total number of drywall panels required for your projects. For example, A 10×10 feet room which wall is 8 feet high, total area of walls and ceiling without subtracting window and door is about = (4×10×8) × (10×10) = 420 sq ft, divide this by 32 i.e. 420/32 = approx 14 pieces, to get total amount of drywall panel.
How to estimate drywall square footage?, To estimate drywall square footage, multiply the width and the height of each wall and ceiling area, then add together all wall and ceiling area to get a total square footage amount for drywall. To get total number of drywall sheets, divide the total square footage of projects by area of one drywall panel.
Formula for drywall square footage = Area of all four walls in square feet + Ceiling area – (Area of door, window and ventilation). Area of wall is calculated by multiplying its width and height and ceiling area is length times width. Subtracting area of door 7×3 = 21 sq ft, window 3×4 = 12 sq ft, and ventilation 1×1 = 1 sq ft, total of 34 square footage.
For example, how do you calculate drywall square footage for 12×12 feet room. Lets do the calculation process:
● 1) Height of each wall = 8 feet high
● 2) Width of wall = 12 feet
● 3) Area of all four walls = 4 × 12×8 = 384 square feet
● Ceiling area = Length × Width = 12′ × 12′ = 144 square feet
● Add all walls and ceiling area = 384 + 144 = 528 square footage
● Calculate area of opening, area of door = 7×3 = 21 sq ft, window area = 3×4 = 12 sq ft, ventilation area = 1×1 = 1 sq ft, total 21 + 12 + 1 = 34 sq ft
● Subtract area of all opening to get total square footage of room for drywall = 528 – 34 = 494 square footage.
● Thus, you would need 494 square footage of drywall panels for 12×12 room. If you are using 4 ft by 8 ft drywall panels that is 32 sq ft, you will be required 16 pieces of 4×8 drywall sheets for 12×12 room for construction of interior walls and ceiling.
How much drywall panel do i need
To calculate how much drywall panels or sheets do you need, you simply dividing the total square footage of project by 32 (if you’re using 4×8 sheets) or by 48 (if you’re using 4×12 sheets). If you want to calculate the cost, just multiply the total number of sheets by the price per sheet.
Standard drywall price is about $10 to $20 per sheet, but the cost will depend on the Length and thickness of the sheets you need. For most residential rooms, a 4-by-8-foot sheet of about 1/2-inch thickness is ideal and costs an average of $15 per sheet.
How many square feet are in a 4×8 sheet of drywall
A 4×8 feet or 4 by 8 feet drywall sheet has 32 square feet. To calculate drywall sheet or panel area in square feet, multiply Width times Length i.e. 4′ × 8′ = 32 square footage. A 4 ft × 8 ft drywall sheet is most common size used for majority of residential building which has 8 foot high wall. This size can allows for either vertical or horizontal installation.
How many square feet are in a 4×10 sheet of drywall
A 4×10 feet or 4 by 10 feet drywall sheet has 40 square feet. To calculate drywall sheet or panel area in square feet, multiply Width times Length i.e. 4′ × 10′ = 40 square footage. Use of 4×10 drywall panels is most suitable for tall and long wall.
How many square feet are in a 4×12 sheet of drywall
A 4×12 feet or 4 by 12 feet drywall sheet has 48 square feet. To calculate drywall sheet or panel area in square feet, multiply Width times Length i.e. 4′ × 12′ = 48 square footage. Use of 4×12 drywall panels is most suitable to create a smooth vertical surfaces to meet higher ceiling.
How many square feet are in a 4×14 sheet of drywall
A 4×14 feet or 4 by 14 feet drywall sheet has 56 square feet. To calculate drywall sheet or panel area in square feet, multiply Width times Length i.e. 4′ × 14′ = 56 square footage. Use of 4×14 drywall panels is most suitable for tall and long wall of comercial application.
