Consider a brick wall with 4 metre in length, 2.5 metre in height and 100 mm in thickness, volume of brick masonry in wall = 4×2.5×0.1= 1m3, volume of one brick with mortar = 0.2×0.1×0.1 = 0.002m3, number of bricks = volume of brick masonry/ volume of one brick = 1m3÷0.002 = 500 bricks, thus, number of bricks required per cubic metre is 500 nos bricks.

1 square meter of a single brick wall contains 60 modular bricks measuring 200 × 100 × 100 mm and a double brick wall contains 120 bricks. To calculate number of bricks per sq. m, divide area of brick wall by surface area of one brick with mortar and add 20% wastage such as 1m2/ 0.02m2 = 50 bricks. Total bricks 50 + 20% of 50= 60 bricks. Typical 4 inch masonry requires 60 bricks per square meter and a typical 9 inch masonry requires 120 bricks per square meter.
