What is plastering and plastering design

Plastering design is used for home decorative of buildings for their ceiling, interior wall and exterior wall, and rcc surface. so home decorative is an art and it can be reaped in all forms with all kinds of material. Plastering and plastering design used several product for interior house design like ceramics ,bricks ,stone, cement , plaster of Paris (pop),gypsum plaster , vedic plaster and lime plaster.

The plaster in also one of easiest material to prepare and it can be used in different areas of your home like kitchen, living room, bathroom and to cover ceiling.Plastering and how to calculate cement for plastering

Types of plaster

We have different types of plaster cast. Mainly it is categorised into 4 types of plaster according to their binding material. And binding material is adhesive material which make strong bond between plaster layer and wall surfaces.Plastering and how to calculate cement for plastering

1) cement plaster
2) gypsum plaster
3) clay plaster
4) lime plaster
5) POP plaster

 Cement plaster

it is a type of binding material in which cement is used as Binder and it has water resistance but not waterproof it is also weather resistance for wall plaster. cement plaster is mix of cement, sand and water in quite proportion and properly used for wall plastering.

Cement plaster is used widely for plastering of wall and interior and exterior designing.Plastering and how to calculate cement for plastering

Gypsum plaster

in the type of binding material in which gypsum paste is used as Binder material for plastering of wall. gypsum plaster is hydrate of calcium sulphate. calcium sulphate (gypsum plaster) is extra ordinary hard and strong need for designing of interior wall make it very fine smooth and fire proof but it has major drawbacks is that it is not water resistance binding material.

POP ( plaster of Paris )

pop is type of binding material in which plaster of paris is act as binding properties commonly known as POP. This type of plastering is widely used today and very popular in construction work. Pop is dehydrate of calcium sulphate as Binder material. plastering of wall plastering with POP make very fine and smooth surface of wall

Lime plaster

in this type of plaster lime act as Binder material for plastering of wall.it consist of sand water and lime. Mortar lime plaster is prepared by mixing sand lime and water in adequate proportion to improve its strength.

Clay or mud plaster

it is made of clay, fine aggregate and fiber. The use of mudd plaster maintain the breathing quality of the wall made of natural material and enhancing the thermal comfort by keeping heat proof. This type of plaster is very much popular in rural areas.

Types of plaster according to their application

According to their application plastering have several types

1) external plastering
2) internal plastering
3) ceiling plastering
4) RCC surface plastering

Coating of plastic material on the exterior of wall is known as exterior plastering and it provide exterior finishing to the work and portland cement sand mixed with water to form workable plaster and several admixture may be added for various purpose to increase its workability.

Coating of plastering material on the interior face of wall is known as interior plastering. and also cement mortar is coated on the roof ceiling that is known as ceiling plaster and some RCC surface of column and beam they have provided plastering coat that is known as rcc surface plastering

Cement sand required for 10 sq. metre plastering

type of plastering

1) external brick wall plastering

2) internal brick wall plastering

3) ceiling or concrete plastering

1) external plastering :- rough and exterior surface of brick wall that is known as external brick wall it needs to improve its surface smoothness by plastering work is known as external plastering. Mix ratio for external brick wall plastering is about 1:4 in which 1 part is cement and 4 part is sand and thickness of external brick wall plastering is about consists of two coat first Coat of 12 mm and second coat of 8 mm that is aggregate thickness of external brick wall plastering is 20 mm.

And external plastering thickness for external wall is ranging between 15 to 20 mm according to condition.

Quantity of cement required for 10 sq meter plastering

■ solve :-

Area of plastering work = 10 m2

Thickness of plastering = 20 mm

You should convert millimetre into meter by dividing with 1000

Thickness = 20/1000 = 0.02 m

Volume of plastering = 10m2× 0.02 m

Volume of plastering work =0. 2 m3

In plastering process some amount of cement mortar quantity get wastage we consider about 20% of mortar wastage

20% of 0.2 m3 = 0.04 m3

Total volume of mortar needed for external brick wall plaster = 0.2m3+0.04m3 = 0.24 m3

Now we have to calculate dry volume of cement mortar for calculating this we should multiply with cofactor 1.33 in wet volume of cement mortar

Dry volume = 1.33 × 0.24 m3 = 0.3192 m3

Now mix ratio for external brick wall plastering is about 1:4

Total proportion = 1+ 4 =5

Part of cement = 1/5

Part of sand = 4/5

We need to convert mortar quantity in cubic metre into cubic feet so this we should multiply with 35.32

Volume of sand = 6/7×0.19152×35.32 cuft

Volume of sand = 5.798 cuft

5.798 cubic feet of sand is required for 10 sqm of internal brick wall plastering

3) Ceiling or concrete wall plastering :- rough surface of ceiling that is known as concrete wall it needs to improve its surface smoothness by plastering work. Mix ratio for ceiling plastering is about 1:3 in which 1 part is cement and 3 part is sand and thickness of ceiling plastering is about consists of one coat of 6 mm

Quantity of cement required for 10 sqm plastering

■ solve :-

Area of plastering work = 10 m2

Thickness of plastering = 6 mm

You should convert millimetre into meter by dividing with 1000

Thickness = 6/1000 = 0.006m

Volume of plastering = 10m2× 0.006 m

Volume of plastering work = 0.06m3

In plastering process some amount of cement mortar quantity get wastage we consider about 20% of mortar wastage

20% of 0.06m3 = 0.012 m3

Total volume of mortar needed for ceiling plaster = 0.06m3+0.012m3 = 0.072 m3

Which cement is best for plastering

Every people want to know when they start to build his house which cement is best for plastering. For knowing best cement for plastering we have to discuss about some properties of cement. There are three kinds of cement available in market OPC, PPC and PSC cement. OPC cement ordinary Portland cement is come in the 3 grade 33 ,43 and 53. OPC 33 grade is old cement their manufacturing is stop today and not available in market.

1) OPC:- ordinary Portland cement that is also known as in short form OPC .OPC is available in market in 3 grade 33, 43 and 53. But of OPC 43 and 53 is best cement for all types of structural work footing beam slab and plastering work today and it has long lasting and life. But the most best cement is OPC 43 used for plastering work .Although OPC-53 is good but sometimes it’s causes cracks building and shrinkage of plastering but it has high strength and long lasting and life that’s why OPC-53 also used for high rise building, dams and Bridge for plastering work.

2) PSC:- it is known as Portland slag cement basically used in coastal areas of building for plastering work to prevent from salty water and most harmful chemical agents that is present in coastal areas due to oceans hard water.

3) PPC:- it is Portland pozzolana cement made of some additive generally it is used as plaster work footing slab beam and column in high rise building structure bridge and dams, because bridge and dams retaining walls always in make contact with running water and standing water and there is harmful chemical agents like alkalis, acids ,Salt present in water and try to react with cement brick wall. To prevent from corrosion and chemical reaction between retaining wall and water soluble harmful chemicals PPC is best plastering material for high rise structure bridge
