Getting the rough opening size right the first time, will save you from tension, when installing your pocket doors. Framing rough opening sizes are really quite simple. just twice the door width and add 2 inch to the width and add 4-1/2″ to the height of the actual width and height of door respectively.

Rough openings as the size of the opening before the finished lumber has been added to the jambs. Before you add your framing, the rough opening should be larger than the door size you’ve chosen. For a 36 inches wide pocket door, the rough opening will be 61 inches wide.

The rough opening for a pocket door frame should be twice the width of the intended door slab, plus 1 inch. So, the rough opening for a 30 inch door slab should be 61 inches wide. Rough opening height of pocket door should be 4 1/2″ more than actual height, containing the vertical length of the door slab, plus the thickness of the door track and desired clearance (about 1 inch, though product dimensions vary).

The rough opening for a 24 inch (24″, or 2 feet) pocket door should be 49 inch wide and 4 1/2″ more than actual height. For a 24″ pocket door, you will need rough opening to twice the width + 1 inches wider & 4-1/2″ taller than the actual door size, so, if you are installing a 24″ wide and 80″ tall or 24″×80″ pocket door, the rough opening will be 49″ wide and 84-1/2″ tall. Thus, there is 49″ wide rough opening will be required for a 24 inch pocket door.

What is the rough opening for a 28 inch pocket door

The rough opening for a 28 inch (28″, or 2′ 4″) pocket door should be 57 inch wide and 4 1/2″ more than actual height. For a 28″ pocket door, you will need rough opening to twice the width + 1 inches wider & 4-1/2″ taller than the actual door size, so, if you are installing a 28″ wide and 80″ tall or 28″×80″ pocket door, the rough opening will be 57″ wide and 84-1/2″ tall. For a 36″ pocket door, you will need rough opening to twice the width + 1 inches wider & 4-1/2″ taller than the actual door size, so, if you are installing a 36″ wide and 80″ tall or 36″×80″ pocket door, the rough opening will be 73″ wide and 84-1/2″ tall. Thus, there is 73″ wide rough opening will be required for a 36 inch pocket door.

Conclusion:

The rough opening for a pocket door frame should be twice the width of the intended door slab, plus 1 inch. So, the rough opening for a 30 inch door slab should be 61 inches wide and 4 1/2″ more than actual height.
