Whether you are planning to construct project, renovate your house, better choice is to use concrete block as construction material to lay out external or partition wall.

Concrete block is highly adaptable and versatile material resistance of fire, variety of aesthetic qualities, high structural capacity, strength, longevity, beautiful appearance, resistant to water, need minimum maintenance and economical building material, due to this it is widely used all over the world.

For the most part, in the US, we don’t use bricks to build houses or business buildings any more. smart people invented precast concrete structural unit/ modules, also known as concrete blocks used for various type of project like Residential Public building and industrial building.

Concrete block size in cm:- standard size of solid and hollow rectangular concrete block is about 40cm long, 20cm width and their depth as 10cm, 15cm, 20cm, 25cm and 30cm. There is different size and shape of concrete block represented as 10cm × 20cm × 40cm, 15cm × 20cm × 40cm, 20cm × 20cm × 40cm, 25cm × 20cm × 40cm and 30cm × 20cm × 40cm.

Concrete block size in feet:- standard size of solid and hollow rectangular concrete block is about 1.31 feet long, 0.656 feet width and their depth as 0.328ft, 0.492ft, 0.656ft, 0.82ft and 0.984. There is different size and shape of concrete block represented as 0.328ft × 0.656ft × 1.31ft, 0.492ft × 0.656ft × 1.31ft, 0.656ft × 0.656ft × 1.31ft, 0.82ft × 0.656ft × 1.31ft and 0.984ft × 0.656ft × 1.31ft.

In some part of India, concrete blocks or concrete bricks are used in replacement of red clay brick due to economic and point of view, because bricks are so expensive and labor intensive that it makes good sense to not use them for building walls when other products like concrete are cheaper, faster, and better for building.

What is the standard size of a cement concrete block

In many part of world, widely used in India, US, UK and other countries, Concrete Masonry Units (CMUs) are manufactured in a variety of sizes. But most common, nominal size of concrete block used is 4″, 6″, 8″, 10″ and 12″ CMU full/ half block. They are identified by their depth or by their thickness of the wall they create. For instance, a 6″ CMU is nominally 6″ or 150mm deep while a 10″ CMU is nominally 10″ or 250mm deep.

Concrete blocks come in Full and half-sizes, their half size is also available which are helpful in reducing the need to cut blocks in the field at corners or the end of walls. The architect should always attempt to design buildings using the nominal dimensions to the nearest half-block size to reduce waste and labor due to cut blocks.

Concrete block found in many shaped and size it may be solid or hollow, hollow concrete block have void known as core to reduce the weight of concrete block. Some hollow concrete block have two or three multiple Voids.

What is the size of solid concrete block

In India, most commonly used, rectangular, standard size of solid concrete block is 4″, 6″ and 8″ thick CMU ( concrete Masonary unit), they are identified by their depth or by their thickness of the wall they create. For instance, a 6″ CMU is nominally 6″ or 150mm deep while a 10″ CMU is nominally 10″ or 250mm deep. Length of solid rectangular concrete block could be 400mm, 500mm or 600mm, their width could be 50mm, 75mm, 100mm, 150mm, 200mm, 250mm or 300mm and their height could be 100mm, 150mm or 200mm.

Standard size of concrete block used in India

There is two types of size used for concrete block:- 1) nominal or standard size and 2) actual size. Nominal size is represented as size of concrete block addition with mortar thickness, and their actual size is kept less than 3/8 inch or 9.5mm than nominal size to allow mortar joints between blocks.

Standard/ nominal/ ideal/ perfect/ best size of concrete block used in India are following:-

1) 4″ solid CMU:- Nominal size of 4″ solid CMU or rectangular concrete block or brick is about 100 × 200 × 400 in mm or 4″ × 8″ × 16″ in inch with respect to (Depth × width × Length), and their actual size is 3 5/8″ × 7 5/8″ × 15 5/8″ in inch or 91.5 × 191.5 × 391.5 in mm. Their half size is also available in 100 × 200 × 200 in mm or 4″ × 8″ × 8″ in inch.

2) 6″ solid CMU:- Nominal size of 6″ solid CMU or rectangular concrete block or brick is about 150 × 200 × 400 in mm or 6″ × 8″ × 16″ in inch with respect to (Depth × width × Length), and their actual size is 5 5/8″ × 7 5/8″ × 15 5/8″ in inch or 141.5 × 191.5 × 391.5 in mm. Their half size is also available in 150 × 200 × 200 in mm or 6″ × 8″ × 8″ in inch.

3) 8″ solid CMU:- Nominal size of 8″ solid CMU or rectangular concrete block or brick is about 200 × 200 × 400 in mm or 8″ × 8″ × 16″ in inch with respect to (Depth × width × Length), and their actual size is 7 5/8″ × 7 5/8″ × 15 5/8″ in inch or 191.5 × 191.5 × 391.5 in mm. Their half size is also available in 200 × 200 × 200 in mm or 8″ × 8″ × 8″ in inch.

What is the size of Hollow concrete block

In many part of world, India, United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia and other countries, many types and different size and shape of concrete Blocks are widely used as construction material for building load bearing wall, retaining wall, security barrier, external and internal wall for residential, public and industrial buildings and for other purpose.

In United States (US), the hollow concrete block is also known as Cinder block, hollow precast, the most common, standard/ nominal/ ideal/ best/perfect size of concrete block is 8″x8″x16″ in inch or 200 × 200 × 400 in mm concrete blocks or CMU, in which CMU is 16 inch long, 8″ wide and 8″ thick used in most part of US for building homes. Their actual size is kept less than 3/8 inch or 9.5mm than nominal size to allow mortar joints between blocks.

In Ireland and United Kingdom (UK), the hollow concrete block is also known as breeze block, hollow precast, the most common, standard/ actual/ ideal/ best/perfect size of concrete block is 3.9″x 8.5″x 17.3″ in inch or 100 × 215 × 440 in mm concrete blocks or CMU, in which CMU is 17.3″ inch long, 8.5″ wide and 3.9″ thick used in most part of Ireland and UK for building homes. Their actual size is kept less than 3/8 inch or 9.5mm than nominal size to allow mortar joints between blocks. So we should add 10mm for mortar thickness to get their nominal size.

In Philippines, the concrete block is also known as hollow block, hollow precast, the most common, standard/ nominal/ ideal/ best/perfect size of concrete block is 4″x 8″x 16″ in inch or 100 × 200 × 400 in mm concrete blocks or CMU, in which CMU is 16″ inch long, 8″ wide and 4″ thick used in most part of Philippines for building homes. Their actual size is kept less than 3/8 inch or 9.5mm than nominal size to allow mortar joints between blocks.

In Australia, the concrete block is also known as Besser block and Besser bricks because Besser company was major supplier of Machines that made concrete block, the most common, standard/ actual/ ideal/ best/perfect size of concrete block is 7.5″x 7.5″x 15.4″ in inch or 190 × 190 × 390 in mm, concrete blocks or CMU, in which CMU is 15.4″ inch long, 7.5″ wide and 7.5″ thick used in most part of Australia for building homes. Their actual size is kept less than 3/8 inch or 9.5mm than nominal size to allow mortar joints between blocks. So we should add 10mm for mortar thickness to get their nominal size.

In NewZealand, the concrete block is also known as construction block, the most common, standard/ nominal/ ideal/ best/perfect size of concrete block is 8″x 8″x 16″ in inch or 200 × 200 × 400 in mm of concrete blocks or CMU, in which CMU is 16″ inch long, 8″ wide and 8″ thick used in most part of NewZealand for building homes. Their actual size is kept less than 3/8 inch or 9.5mm than nominal size to allow mortar joints between blocks. So their actual size is 190 × 190 × 390 in mm or 7.5″ × 7.5″ × 15.5″ in inch.

In Canada, the concrete block is also known as concrete block or CMU, the most common, standard/ nominal/ ideal/ best/perfect size of concrete block is 8″x 8″x 16″ in inch or 200 × 200 × 400 in mm of concrete blocks or CMU, in which CMU is 16″ inch long, 8″ wide and 8″ thick used in most part of Canada for building homes. Their actual size is kept less than 3/8 inch or 9.5mm than nominal size to allow mortar joints between blocks. So their actual size is 190 × 190 × 390 in mm or 7.5″ × 7.5″ × 15.5″ in inch.
