What size steel beam for 16 feet span | Steel beam size for 16 feet span | Universal beam size according to span | ISMB, i beam, H beam, UB’s, rolled steel joist (RSJ) and W beam.
There is different shape and size of hot rolled Steel section such as H beam (universal column), I beam (universal beam), angles, channels and etc are used in construction project such as field of agriculture construction, industrial construction, multi storey building, different factories and residential projects.
Today is the demand of steel structure in the field of construction projects that replace the depending on reinforced cement concrete, their higher strength, less time consuming, make it ideal for residential project in short duration.
Steel beam is also known as Universal beam or UB’s or I beam or H beam, W beam, rolled steel joist (rsj), double T due to their shape. Steel beam are very versatile and can be used in various structural Steel construction project.
It is consist of two horizontal plates known as flanges connected by vertical component known as web. Generally depth of Universal beam or steel beam is greater than their width which makes them suitable for beam application where strength needs to be in one of direction. Which is the most often used section for structural Steel purpose.
A rolled steel joist (RSJ) is a common type of beam used for structural steelwork. It is also known as an ‘I-beam’. Rolled steel joist (srj) are usually made from mild steel but can also be formed from aluminium or other materials.
Steel beam or universal beam are extremely effective for use as structural Steel. they provide the maximum amount of strength for the volume of Steel used in making them the most efficient method of carrying bending and shear loads. In this article you know about Steel beam or RSJ beam size for 16 feet span according to Thumb Rule and experience basis.
Steel beam size depend on various factors, how high is the building or projects?, what is the dead and live load of structure, grade of Steel used, span between the two column, others factors. Generally ISMB100 or UB100×75 or W4, ISMB150 or UB150×75 or W6, ISMB200 or UB200×100 or W8, ISMB250 or UB250×125 or W10, ISMB300 or UB300×140 or W12, ISMB350 or UB300×140 or W14, ISMB400 or UB400×140 or W16, ISMB450 or UB450×150 or W18, ISMB500 or UB500×180 or W20, ISMB550 or UB550×190 or W22 and ISMB600 or UB600×210 or W24 steel beam are used in construction industries.
Generally Steel beam size represented by dimensions of web × flange × weight per unit length, measured in mm or inch such as size of steel beam ismb150 represented as 150 × 75 or 6″×3″, where 150mm is depth of steel beam, 75mm is their flange width.
Variation among the universal beam include material, length of the web and depth of flanges. Different weight loads and area will require different measurement on the beam, the longer the web, the more force it can stand up and down, the wider of flange, the more side to side movement the Beam can withstand. Wide flange beam are also known as W- beam.
Generally, for steel beams or universal beams, W-beams, I-beams, UB or hot-rolled sections or rolled steel beams (RSJ) with a span of 16 feet, use ISMB 250, UB 250× 125 or W10. in residential buildings or projects.

What size steel beam or RSJ for 16 feet span
Structure steel is a versatile building material, though it can be used in great variety of ways. The most economic span range for conventional steel floor and roof framing is from 10 to 32 feet.
As per general experience and thumb rule, to calculate the required and necessary depth of beam, divide the span length in mm by 18 to 20 such as span length in mm/ depth = 18 to 20 for primary beam and for secondary beam span length to depth ratio is about 15 to 18. The width of this beam would be 1/3 and 1/2 of the depth. The dimensions of a Girder would be same, but the flange would be thicker. A beam overhang can be maximum of 3/8 of the supported span.
Steel beam or rsj size for 16 feet span:- as per general thumb rule, for 16 feet span size of steel beam or universal beam or w beam or I beam or UB’s or hot rolled section or Rolled steel joist (RSJ) should be ISMB 250 or UB 250×125 or W10 used for residential building or projects or construction in which depth of section of beam is 250mm (10″) and width of flange or width of beam is 125mm (5″). This is ideal, standard and most suitable size of steel beam or RSJ beam used for 16 feet span under normal load condition.
