How to calculate bricks per square foot

To calculate bricks per square foot, you need to know the size of the bricks and the wall area to be covered. The formula is:Bricks per square foot = Wall area/ Brick area. Ensure that the units are consistent (e.g., square feet for wall area and inches for brick size). Divide the total wall area by the area of one brick to find the number of bricks needed per square foot.

As we know brickwork is masonry work used to cover as internal and external brick wall in the house made by bricklayer using bricks and cement mortar in different ratio. Brick wall may be load bearing or non- load bearing structure.

Bricks are made of mixture of clay sand and water, they have uniform shape and size, their sizes are different in different nation. But we use nominal size of brick in calculation. In United States, United kingdom’s, India and rest part of world have different standard size of bricks and also some are available on locally based.

Various countries have various standard brick size and dimensions, however, brick can be made in multiple shapes and sizes, depending on its application.

If bricks are large, it is difficult to burn them properly and they become too heavy to be placed with a single hand. On the other hand, if bricks are small, more quantity of mortar is required. Hence, a standard dimension is determined for various brick works.

In United States standard size of bricks are 8″× 3 5/8″ × 2 1/4″, In United Kingdom standard size of bricks are 8 5/8″× 4 1/8″ × 2 5/8″, in Australia, standard size of bricks are 230× 110× 76 mm, in Canada standard size of bricks are 8″×3 5/8″× 2 1/4″ and in India nominal size of bricks used are 8″ × 4″ × 4″ (length: width: thickness).

How to calculate bricks per square foot

To calculate the number of bricks per square for a 4 inch brick wall, divide the one square foot area (12×12 = 144″) of brick wall by surface area of one brick (8×4 = 32″). Therefore, Bricks per square foot = 144/32 = 4.5 bricks.

How to calculate bricks per square foot we will follow the following steps:-

Standard dimension of bricks are 8″× 4″× 4″:- standard dimension of bricks are 190× 90× 90 mm adding 10mm mortar we will get nominal size of bricks as 200× 100× 100 mm or 8″× 4″× 4″.

Area of one brick = 8″× 4″ = 32 sq. Inches:- we have nominal size of bricks 8″× 4″× 4″ with respect to length, width and thickness. So area of one bricks by multiplying Length and width, area = 8″× 4″ = 32 sq. Inches.

1 square foot = 12″× 12″ = 144 sq. Inches:- as we know 1 foot is equal to 12 inches, so 1 square foot = 12″× 12″ = 144 sq. Inches.

Bricks per square foot = 144/32 = 4.5 nos:- calculating bricks per square foot by dividing 144 square inches by area of one brick in square inches, such as 144/ 32 = 4.5 nos, so there are 4.5 nos bricks per square foot.

A typical 4-inch brick wall requires approximately 5 bricks per square foot, and a 9-inch brick wall requires 10 bricks per square foot. Therefore, for a 100 square foot and 4-inch thick brick wall, you need 5×100 = 500 bricks.

Bricks calculation formula in feet

Bricks calculation formula in feet is as follows: a typical 4-inch brick wall requires approximately 5 bricks per square foot, and a 9-inch brick wall requires 10 bricks per square foot. Fo example, a 100 square feet and 4″ thick brick wall requires 100×5= 500 bricks and 9″ thick brick wall requires 100×10 = 1000 bricks.

Conclusions:-

To calculate the number of bricks per square for a 9 inch brick wall, divide the one square foot area (12×12 = 144″) of brick wall by surface area of one brick (8×4 = 32″) and result is multiply by 2. Therefore, Bricks per square foot for a 9 inch brick wall= (144/32) × 2 = 9 bricks.
