When we are dreaming of new house construction, desire to achieve required higher strength and durability of any structure, mortar mix ratio is an important factor deciding the strength and durability of your house.

Mortar is a workable paste made of cement and sand which hardens to bind building material such as stones, bricks, and concrete masonry units, to fill and seal the irregular gaps between cement sand and aggregate, spread the weight of them evenly, and sometimes to add decorative colors or patterns to masonry walls.

Mortar is mixture of cement, sand and water for making as paste, this paste is used in bricks laying, tiles installation and plastering. In ancient periods, when cement was not discovered, in place of cement the lime are used as adhesive and binding material. Lime mortar are made by mixture of lime and aggregate such as sand with water. But in modern time lime mortar is created by mixing of cement lime and sand in required proportion.

**Mix ratio for mortar for bricks, concrete slab, floor & tiles installation**

To achieve higher strength and durability of any structure, the building material like cement, sand aggregate and water are mix in required proportion to make paste as mortar. Generally mortar mix would be 3 to 6 parts of aggregate as sand and 1 parts is cement. Mixture should be not too wet and too dry.

There are various mortar mix ratio (cement to sand ratios) for each element of the building construction. It is generally as follows:-

1) For masonry construction block/ brick work, ratio of mortar mix is = 1:3, 1:4, 1:5 and 1:6.

2) For reinforced concrete, ratio of motar mix is = 1:2:3, 1:1.5:3, and 1:1:2. The coarse aggregate of 20 mm graded down to 10 mm will be two times the respective fine aggregate.

3) For plastering, ratio of mortar mix (cement to sand ratio) is = 1:2, 1:3, 1:4, and 1:5.

4) For plain cement concrete, ratio of mortar mix (cement to sand) is = 1:3, 1:4, 1:5, and 1:6.

**Mortar mix ratio for brickwork**

as per general guidelines, for block/ brick work or masonry construction, typically, ratio of mortar mix is 1:3 (1 part cement to 3 parts sand), 1:4 (1 part cement to 4 parts sand), 1:5 (1 part cement to 5 parts sand) and 1:6 (1 part cement to 6 parts sand) are used.

**Mortar mix ratio for plastering**

as per general guidelines, for plastering or rendering of external or internal wall typically, ratio of mortar mix is 1:4 (1 part cement to 4 parts sand), 1:5 (1 part cement to 5 parts sand) and 1:6 (1 part cement to 6 parts sand) are used.

**Mortar mix ratio for RCC**:- as per general guidelines, for reinforced concrete or rcc, typically, ratio of mortar mix is 1:2 (1 part cement to 2 parts sand), 1:1.5 (1 part cement to 1.5 parts sand) and 1:1 (1 part cement to 1 parts sand) are used. The coarse aggregate of 20 mm graded down to 10 mm will be two times the respective fine aggregate.

**Mortar mix ratio for PCC**:- as per general guidelines, for plain cement concrete or pcc, typically, ratio of mix mortar is is 1:3 (1 part cement to 3 parts sand), 1:4 (1 part cement to 4 parts sand), 1:5 (1 part cement to 5 parts sand) and 1:6 (1 part cement to 6 parts sand) are used.

For preparing standard mortar mix made of cement and sand, normally mix ratio for mortar is 1: 6, in which 1 parts is cement and 6 part is aggregate as sand. This is commonly used, perfect, ideal, best and standard mix ratio for mortar used for bricklayer, plastering, tiles installation and others masonry work. Others mortar mix ratio like 1: 3, 1: 4 and 1:5 is also applicable and are used for different purpose.

**Mortar mix ratio for brickwork**

Brickwork is laying of bricks to form external wall and partition or internal wall in house and also as retaining wall, boundary wall. Brick wall are made of 9 inch thick commonly known as double brick wall and those form of 4 inches thick commonly known as single brick wall.

Typical, mortar mix ratio for brickwork is 1: 6 (1 parts cement and 6 parts sand) and 1: 4 (1 parts cement and 4 parts sand) used for construction of brick wall in house. Generally, mortar mix ratio 1: 6 (1 parts cement and 6 parts sand) are used for 9 inch thick external brick wall or double brick and mortar mix ratio 1: 4 (1 parts cement and 4 parts sand) are used for 4 inch thick internal brick wall or single brick.

**Mix ratio for lime mortar**

In ancient time lime mortar are made of mixture of lime, sand and water, their mix ratio should be kept 1: 3, in which 1 parts is lime as binder material and 3 parts is sand being used. There is a lots of voids are present between the particles of sand, generally 1/3 volume of sand is voids, to fill the gape between the particles, lime are mixed with sand and water to achieve higher strength and durability of structure.

**Cement lime mortar mix ratio**

For higher strength and durable structure, cement lime mortar mix are used. Cement lime mortar are composed of cement, lime, sand and water. Generally their mix ratio would be 1: 0.25: 3 (cement: lime: sand), in which 1 parts is cement, 0.25 is lime and 3 parts is washed, well graded, sharp sand mix with water.

**Mix ratio for tile mortar**

Tile mortar prepare by mix of cement and sand, used for installation and fixing of wall and floor tiles, generally mix ratio for tile mortar is 1: 3 (cement: sand), in which 1 part is cement mix with 3 parts of well graded and sharp sand. This is normal, standard, ideal, commonly used and best mix ratio for tile mortar used for tile installation and fixing.

**Mix ratio for concrete slab**

Concrete is one of the most important building material used in civil construction made of mixture of cement, sand, aggregate and water in required proportion. It is used to make concrete slab and others concreting structure.

Generally, mix ratio for concrete slab is 1: 2: 4 (cement: sand: aggregate), this mix ratio for concrete slab is made of 1 part cement : 2 parts sand : 4 parts coarse aggregate, and this concrete must be placed within half an hour of mixing.

**Mix ratio for concrete floor**

Generally, mix ratio for concrete floor is 1: 2: 4 (cement: sand: aggregate), this mix ratio for concrete floor is made of 1 part cement : 2 parts sand : 4 parts coarse aggregate. This is normal, standard, ideal, commonly used and best mix ratio for concrete floor used in flooring. This concrete must be placed within half an hour of mixing.

**Mix ratio for concrete blocks**

Concrete blocks is made by mixture of cement, sand, aggregate in water and and the size of aggregate must be not more than 10mm, generally used mix ratio for conctete blocks is 1: 3: 6 (cement: sand: aggregate) or it is also made by mixing of cement-sand mixture with a ratio of 1:7, 1:8 or 1:9. These mixtures, if properly cured, give concrete blocks a compression strength well above what is required in a building.
