**Unit weight of steel:-** unit weight of steel is defined as the ratio of weight of steel to unit volume of steel, unit weight of steel is generally measured in kg per cubic meter is 7850kg/m3, measured in kN per cubic meter is 78.5kN/m3 or measured in gram per cubic centimetre is 7.85 g/cm3, which is approximately equal in pounds per cubic feet is 490 lbs/ft3 or measured in Pounds per cubic yards is 13231 lbs/yd3.

Unit mass of steel is the ratio of weight of Steel to its per unit volume. Usually it is expressed in kilograms per cubic metre or Pounds per cubic feet. Unit mass of steel is 7850 kg/m3 (kilograms per cubic metre) or 490 lbs/ft3 (pounds per cubic feet).

Unit weight of 8mm or #2.5 rebar/steel is 0.265lb/foot, for 10mm or #3 rebar/ steel, it could be 0.376lb/foot, for 12mm or #4 rebar/ steel, it could be 0.668lb/ft, for 16mm or #5 rebar/ steel, it could be 1.043lb/ft, for 20mm or #6 rebar/ steel, it could be 1.502lb/ foot, for 22mm or #7 rebar/ steel, it could be 2.044lb/ ft, for 25mm or #8 rebar/ steel, it could be 2.67lb/ foot, for 28mm or #9 rebar/ steel, it could be 3.40lb/ foot, for 32mm or #10 rebar/ steel, it could be 4.303lb/ foot and unit weight for 36mm or #11 rebar/ steel, it could be 5.313lb/foot.

Unit Weight of steel is defined as ratio of weight of steel to its unit volume, weight of Steel measured in kilogram (kg) and its volume is measured in cubic metre (m3), then its unit weight = unit mass/unit volume, represented as W = m/V, where W is Steel unit weights, m for mass and V for volume, it is also known as specific weight of steel or density of steel and their SI unit is kilogram per cubic metre (kg/m3). Steel is most used element in civil engineering for structural construction, after knowing the Steel Unit Weight, it is easy to calculate amount of Steel required for projects.

Generally, when its meaured in kg/m3, its unit weight in kg per cubic meter (kg/m3) is around 7850kg, when its meaured in g/cm3, its unit weight in gram per cubic centimeter (g/cm3) is around 7.850 gram, when its meaured in kN/m3, its unit weight in kilo Newton per cubic meter (kN/m3) is around 78.50kN, when its meaured in lbs/in3, its unit weight in pounds per cubic inch (lbs/in3) is around 0.28 pounds and when its meaured in lbs/ft3, its unit weight in pounds per cubic foot (lbs/ft3) is around 490.74 pounds.

**The value of Unit Weight of Steel in different units**

Steel Unit Weight measured in different units like kg/m3, kN/m3, g/cm3, lbs/in3 and lbs/ft3, the value of Steel Unit Weight is around 7850kg/m3, when its measured in Kilogram per cubic metre, 78.50kN/m3, when its measured in kilonewton per cubic metre, 7.850g/cm3, when its measured in gram per cubic centimetre,0.28lbs/in3, when its measured in pounds per cubic inch and 490.059lbs/ft3, when its measured in Pounds per cubic foot.

**Unit Weight of Steel formula**

In india, Steel unit weight is calculated in kilogram per metre (kg/m) and kilogram per foot kg/ft, in US imperial system and EN members of states, it is measured in Pounds per foot (lbs/ft) and Pounds per cubic inch (lbs/in).

Weight of steel bars formula:- there are two formula D^2L/162 and D^2L/533 are used for unit weight of Steel per unit length. D^2L/162, this formula are used for calculate its weight of steel bars in kg per metre (kg/m) and D^2L/533, this formula are used for calculate its weight of steel bars in kg per foot (kg/ft).

For example, calculate Steel Unit Weight of 10mm Steel bar in Kilogram per metre and kilogram per foot.

10mm steel bar weight in kg per meter, given diameter of Steel bar 10mm, length of Steel is 1 metre, then put all value in D^2L/162 formula, weight = (10×10×1)/162 = 0.617kg/m, this is 10mm Steel bar weight in kg per meter.

10mm steel bar weight in kg per foot, given diameter of Steel bar 10mm, length of Steel is 1 foot, then put all value in D^2L/533 formula, weight = (10×10×1)/533 = 0.188kg/ft, this is 10mm Steel bar weight in kg per foot.

**How to calculate Steel rod weight**

As we know there is a different shape of Steel rod available in market round/circular solid bar, square shaped steel rod, hexagonal bar, etc, steel is most important construction material used in building construction, now question is arises that “how to calculate Steel rod weight”, after knowing the Steel rod weight, it is easy to calculate amount of Steel required for any projects like industrial building construction, high rise building, low rise building, Bridge, dams, schools, hospitals, commercial buildings, etc.

To calculate the weight of Steel bar or rod we are using some formula, which are very helpful for site engineer, supervisor and common people.

**Weight of Steel bars formula**

To calculate the weight of Steel bars or rod formula are following:-

● for round/circular solid bar – Diamm2 × 0.006165, when it measured in kilogram per metre (kg/m).

● for round/circular solid bar – Diamm2 × 0.004143, when it measured in pounds per foot (lbs/ft).

● for hexagonal solid bar – sizemm2 × 0.006798, when it measured in kilogram per metre (kg/m).

● for hexagonal solid bar – sizemm2 × 0.006165, when it measured in pounds per foot (lbs/ft).

● for square shaped solid bar – sizemm2 × 0.00785, when it measured in kilogram per metre (kg/m).

● for square shaped solid bar – sizemm2 × 0.00527, when it measured in pounds per foot (lbs/ft).

**Unit Weight of 6mm Steel bar/ rod/reinforcement**

This is very thin steel bar sized, not used for any structural work, it is only used as wire bar, it is too thin, that known as pencil rod.

Round/circular Steel bar measured in different units, unit weight of 6mm Steel bar measured in Kilogram per meter (kg/m) is around 0.22kg, when its measured in Kilogram per foot (kg/ft), then their weight should be approx 0.067kg, when its measured in pounds per foot (lbs/ft), then their weight should be approx 0.1478 pounds and when its measured in pounds per inch (lbs/inch), their weight should be approx 0.0123 pounds.

**Unit Weight of 8mm Steel bar/ rod/reinforcement bar/rebar**

This is thin steel bar sized, it is used as distribution bar in roof casting and lintel beam, it is not suitable for RCC work of beam and column.

Round/circular Steel bar measured in different units, unit weight of 8mm Steel bar/rod/rebar measured in Kilogram per meter (kg/m) is around 0.390kg, when its measured in Kilogram per foot (kg/ft), then their weight should be approx 0.12kg, when its measured in pounds per foot (lbs/ft), then their weight should be approx 0.262 pounds and when its measured in pounds per inch (lbs/inch), their weight should be approx 0.0218 pounds.

**Unit Weight of 10mm Steel bar/ rod/reinforcement bar/rebar**

This is medium steel bar sized, it is used as main bar or distribution bar in roof casting and lintel beam, it is not suitable for RCC work of beam and column.

Round/circular Steel bar measured in different units, unit weight of 10mm Steel bar/rod/rebar measured in Kilogram per meter (kg/m) is around 0.617kg, when its measured in Kilogram per foot (kg/ft), then their weight should be approx 0.188kg, when its measured in pounds per foot (lbs/ft), then their weight should be approx 0.414 pounds and when its measured in pounds per inch (lbs/inch), their weight should be approx 0.0345 pounds.

**Unit Weight of 12mm Steel bar/ rod/reinforcement bar/rebar**

This is steel bar sized, it is used as distribution bar in roof casting and lintel beam, it is minimum bar size required for RCC work of beam and column.

Round/circular Steel bar measured in different units, unit weight of 12mm Steel bar/rod/rebar measured in Kilogram per meter (kg/m) is around 0.889kg, when its measured in Kilogram per foot (kg/ft), then their weight should be approx 0.271kg, when its measured in pounds per foot (lbs/ft), then their weight should be approx 0.597 pounds and when its measured in pounds per inch (lbs/inch), their weight should be approx 0.04978 pounds.

**Unit Weight of 16mm Steel bar/ rod/reinforcement bar/rebar**

16mm Steel bar used in all type of RCC structural work of design structure of beam, column, Foundation and slab.

Round/circular Steel bar measured in different units, unit weight of 16mm Steel bar/rod/rebar measured in Kilogram per meter (kg/m) is around 1.58kg, when its measured in Kilogram per foot (kg/ft), then their weight should be approx 0.482kg, when its measured in pounds per foot (lbs/ft), then their weight should be approx 1.061 pounds and when its measured in pounds per inch (lbs/inch), their weight should be approx 0.0884 pounds.

**Unit Weight of 20mm Steel bar/ rod/reinforcement bar/rebar**

20mm Steel bar used in all type of RCC structural work of design structure of beam, column, Foundation and slab.

Round/circular Steel bar measured in different units, unit weight of 20mm Steel bar/rod/rebar measured in Kilogram per meter (kg/m) is around 2.469kg, when its measured in Kilogram per foot (kg/ft), then their weight should be approx 0.752kg, when its measured in pounds per foot (lbs/ft), then their weight should be approx 1.659 pounds and when its measured in pounds per inch (lbs/inch), their weight should be approx 0.138 pounds.

**Unit Weight of 25mm Steel bar/ rod/reinforcement bar/rebar**

25mm Steel bar used in all type of RCC structural work of design structure of beam, column, Foundation and slab.

Round/circular Steel bar measured in different units, unit weight of 25mm Steel bar/rod/rebar measured in Kilogram per meter (kg/m) is around 3.858kg, when its measured in Kilogram per foot (kg/ft), then their weight should be approx 1.176kg, when its measured in pounds per foot (lbs/ft), then their weight should be approx 2.592 pounds and when its measured in pounds per inch (lbs/inch), their weight should be approx 0.216 pounds.

**Unit Weight of 32mm Steel bar/ rod/reinforcement bar/rebar**

32mm Steel bar used in all type of RCC structural work of design structure of beam, column, Foundation and slab.

Round/circular Steel bar measured in different units, unit weight of 32mm Steel bar/rod/rebar measured in Kilogram per meter (kg/m) is around 6.32kg, when its measured in Kilogram per foot (kg/ft), then their weight should be approx 1.926kg, when its measured in pounds per foot (lbs/ft), then their weight should be approx 4.25 pounds and when its measured in pounds per inch (lbs/inch), their weight should be approx 0.354 pounds.

Unit weight of steel rods is calculated in two unit 1) steel weight per meter in kg and 2) steel weight per foot in Kg. there is a unique formula and easy calculation of different size of Steel bar having length 12 metres. Formula for steel weight is following:

Formula for steel weight per metre in kg is following:

**steel weight =(Dia)*2/162×Length**

**W =( D)*2 L/162 kg**

And formula for steel weight per foot in kg is following

**steel weight =(Dia)*2/533×Length**

**W =( D)*2 L/533 kg**

**1 foot steel mass/ weight:-** 1 foot of 6mm steel weight around is 0.067 kgs, 8mm is 0.120 kgs, 10mm is 0.188 kgs, 12mm is 0.270 kgs, 16mm is 0.480 kgs, 20mm is 0.751 kgs, 25mm is 1.174 kgs and 32mm is 1.925 kgs.

Formula for Steel weight per metre or per foot in kg is used for calculation of Unit Weight of Steel. For example unit weight of 8 mm steel per meter or per foot in kg –

8 mm steel weight per meter = (8×8)/162 kg/m

Unit weight of 8mm steel = 0.395 kg/m

Unit weight of 8 mm steel = (8×8)/533 kg/ft

Unit weight of 8 mm steel = 0.12 kg/ft

Unit weight of 8mm Steel per meter is 0.395 kg/m and per foot is 0.12 kg/foot

**d2/162 formula derivation for steel unit weight per meter**

**We **have to calculate unit weight of Steel rods in Kilogram per metre and we know that unit weight of steel bar is 7850 kg/m3. Its means 7850 kg is steel weight of 1 cubic metre.

**To derive D^2/162**

We know weight of steel = volume of steel × steel density and volume = cross sectional area× Length, so weight of steel = cross sectional area × Length × density

Steel weight formula = πD*2/ 4 × L × density, where w = weight of steel, π = 3.14, D = diameter of Steel bar in mm, L= length of Steel bar =1m and density = 7850 kg/ m3.

Putting all the value we get weight = 3.14 × Dmm*2/4 × 1m × 7850 kg/m3, now we have to convert millimetre square into metre square, 1mm^2 = 1/1000m×1/1000m =1/1000000m^2

Calculating this we get weight = 3.14 × D m2/4000000 × 1m × 7850 kg/m3, such as weight = D*2 × 26649/4000000 kg, so weight of steel = D^2 × 0.006162 kg and it can be written as follow weight= D*2/1/0.006162 kg, when we divide 1/0.006162 we get 162 so final weight of steel bars formula kg per metre is weight =D*2 ×L/162 kg/m is derived.

Hence steel unit weight formula for kg per meter is **weight =D*2 ×L/162 kg/m**

**d2/533 formula derivation for steel unit weight per foot**

We know weight of steel = volume × density, such as w = πD*2/4× L× density, proceed w = 3.14 × Dmm*2/4 × 1ft × 222 kg/ ft3.

As 1mm*2 = 1/ 304.80 × 304.80 ft*2, hence w = (3.14 × Dft × 1ft/ 4 × 304.80 × 304.80) × 222kg/ft3, solving you get w = D*2 × 0.001878 kg/ foot, so weight = D*2/1/0.001878 kg/ foot, hence **weight = D^2/ 533 × L kg/ ft formula derived. **This formula is used for steel weight calculation per foot.

**Steel weight per foot:-** weight of steel per foot for 6mm is 0.067 kgs, 8mm is 0.120 kgs, 10mm is 0.188 kgs, 12mm is 0.270 kgs, 16mm is 0.480 kgs, 20mm is 0.751 kgs, 25mm is 1.174 kgs and 32mm is 1.925 kgs

**8mm steel weight per meter**

● find the 8 mm steel weight** per meter and length 12 metre and 10 number of Steel in one bundle:-**

0.39 kg is Unit weight of 8 mm steel per metre,4.74 kg is for 12 meter and 47.407 kg is for 1 bundle 8 mm steel.

** 10 mm steel rods weight per meter**

1) **10 mm steel rods weight **for 1m =10×10×1÷162=0.617 kg

2) **10 mm steel rods weight** for 12m W=10×10×12÷162=7.407kg

0.617 kg is Unit weight of 10 mm steel per metre,7.407 kg is for 12 meter and 51.85 kg is for 1 bundle 10 mm steel.

**12mm steel bar weight per meter**

● how to calculate 12mm steel bar weight having length 12 metre and 5 number of steel bar in one bundle:-

● weight calculation:-

1) 12mm steel bar weight for 1m =12×12×1÷162=0.889kg

2) 12mm steel bar weight for 12m =12×12×12÷162=10.667 kg

3) 12mm steel bar weight for1bundle

=12×12×12×5÷162=53.333kg

0.889 kg is Unit weight of 12 mm steel per metre,10.667 kg is for 12 meter and 53.34 kg is for 1 bundle 8 mm steel.

**16mm steel bar weight**

1) 16mm steel bar weight for 1m W=16×16×1÷162=1.58kg

=16×16×12×3÷162=56.889kg

1.58 kg is Unit weight of 16 mm steel per metre,18.96 kg is for 12 meter and 56.889 kg is for 1 bundle 16 mm steel.

**20mm steel weight**

● weight calculation:-

1) 20mm steel weight for 1m W =20×20×1÷162=2.469kg

3) 20mm steel weight for 1 bundle =20×20×12×2÷162=59.259kg

2.469 kg is Unit weight of 20 mm steel per metre,29.629 kg is for 12 meter and 59.259 kg is for 1 bundle 20 mm steel.

**25mm steel rod weight**

● weight calculation:-

1) 25mm steel rod weight for 1m W=25×25×1÷162=3.858kg

2) 25mm steel rod weight for 12m W=25×25×12÷162=46.296kg

● weight calculation:-

1) for 1m W=32×32×1÷162=6.32kg

1) for 1m W=40×40×1÷162=9.876kg

W=(3.14×Dft×1ft/4×304.80×304.80)×222kg/ft3

W = D*2 ×0.001878 kg/foot

Weight=D*2/1/0.001878 kg/foot

**Weight =D*2/533 ×L kg/ft**
