What are bricks?

Bricks are red clay burnt moulded structure of rectangular shape extensively used in civil work because of it durability strength and easy availability.

good quality of bricks used to form exterior and interior partition of wall ,ground flooring and pavement making in civil construction. good bricks have sharp edge rectangular shape and Square corner and produce metallic ringing sound when struck against one another.

What are composition of good quality clay brick?

What is bricks and their composition and properties.
Silica and Alumina are two most important ingredient of red clay bricks. it provide plasticity to Clay bricks when it moulded and gain Desire shape.

And Alumina is also act as cementing material between raw particle of bricks and ferric oxide provide it red colour and lime can withstand melting of bricks when burn over 1600 degree celsius temperature in hot furnace.

Main constituent and composition of bricks are silica, Alumina, lime, iron oxide ,magnesia, Sulphur trioxide and water.

● brick composition:-

1) silica- silica is about 50 to 60% of dry weight of bricks
2)Alumina is about 20 to 30% of dry weight of bricks
3)lime is about 10 to 12% dry weight of bricks
4)ferric oxide is about less than 7% of dry weight of bricks
5) magnesia is about less than 1% of dry weight of bricks
6)Alkalies is about less than 10% of dry weight of bricks.

*1)silica :-
It is about 50 to 60% of dry weight of bricks in provided plasticity to bricks for easy moulded and cast their rectangular shape, it prevent from cracking shrinking and warping of bricks and also provide durability and uniform shape to bricks.

Silica is act as cohesive material between particles of bricks when there is in excess amount of silica it destroy the cohesion between particle and bricks .and bricks become brittle .

A large percentage of sand or uncombined silica in clay is undesirable.

*2) Alumina :-Alumina is about 20%- 30% of dry weight of red clay bricks and it absorb water and provide plasticity to bricks such that it can be easily moulded in Desire shape and gain rectangular shape.

if alumina is present in excess quantity it causes cracks in bricks and drying and become too hard when burnt.

6) weight calculation of Steel bar and its formula

7) what is admixture of concrete and its types and its properties

*3) Lime:- lime is about less than 10% of dry weight of bricks. it provide withstand of particles of bricks at high temperature about 1600 degree celsius in hot furnace during melting.
And Get It original rectangular shape. excess of lime causes bricks to melt and loses its shape.

*4) iron oxide:- it is used about less than 7% of dry weight of bricks. it provide red colour to brick on burning when excess of oxygen is available and dark brown or even black colour when oxygen is insufficient amount available but excess of ferric oxide make the bricks to change its colour dark blue and also ferric oxide give it strength and hardness.

*5) magnesia :-
it can be used less than 1% of dry weight of bricks .it can be used in small quantity ,magnesia in brick impart yellow colour and also provide decrease in shrinkage but excess of magnesia lead to decay of red bricks.

  1. I got immense knowledge of composition of clay brick and its required other information. Now I need to know how to cut down the lime from original clay. Its nearly 7-9 % of weight in clay. What would be the best chemical to use. When wet brick dries in sun, nearly 20% of brick cracks in two pieces.
For kind information, I have tested ingredients of clay bricks as follows Fe – 9.66 ppm Sand 37.5%, Silica 35.28% Clay 27.18%, Soil Texture- CL, OM-0.03 , I need to confirm the % of magnesia and Lime. Pls need your suggestions and advice.
