The main component of the highway or Expressway are right of way, roadway width, shoulder, road margin, traffic separator and kerbs. The area of the land that required for the road along its alignment is termed as right of way (RoW).
The right of way is the total land area acquired for the construction of roadway along its alignment. Width of right of way should be enough to accommodate all the elements of road cross section in highway and may generally provide to future development or future extension. In short form right-of-way is also written as RoW.
Width of right of way (RoW) is the area of land acquired for width of formation or roadways + other necessities + future extension along its alignment. Width of formation depends on category of Highway and width of roadway and Road margin. The importance of Reserve land in emphasized by extra width of land is available for the construction of Roadside facilities, land acquisition is India is too difficult later because the land may be occupied by the various other purpose building business etc.
