Dry and wet volume of concrete and their difference | difference between wet volume and dry volume of concrete | why we multiply 1.54 in wet volume for convert into dry volume, in this topic we know about difference between wet volume and dry volume of concrete and why we multiply cofactor 1.54 in wet volume for convert into dry volume.
Now let us discuss about what is dry and wet volume of concrete and difference, dry volume of concrete is mixture of cement, sand and aggregate without water in dry condition while wet volume of concrete is mixture of cement, sand and aggregate with water in wet condition.
When we prepare ready mix concrete for construction work we have require coarse aggregate, fine aggregate (sand), cement and water. We buy different ingredients of concrete from different place that’s have air voids and pore between the particles.
What is dry and wet volume of concrete
There is two types of concrete ingredient like cement, sand and aggregate used in building construction: wet volume of concrete and dry volume of concrete.
Dry volume of concrete is mixture of cement, sand and aggregate without water in dry condition & wet volume of concrete is mixture of cement, sand and aggregate with water in wet condition.
what is wet volume of concrete
When different dry ingredients of concrete like cement, sand and aggregate mix by adding water, then their volume is decrease by 54% due to evaporation of air voids and filling of pores present in coarse aggregate and sand and cement.
Wet volume of concrete is mixture of cement, sand and aggregate with water in wet condition, volume of dry concrete is decrease by 54% in wet condition due to evaporation of air void between aggregate, sand and cement particles.
what is dry volume of concrete
Volume of Dry mix of different ingredients of concrete like cement sand and aggregate before adding water is known as dry volume of concrete having air voids and pores between particles.
Dry volume of concrete is mixture of cement, sand and aggregate without water in dry condition, their volume is increased by 54% of wet volume due to presence of air voids between cement, sand and aggregate particles.
It means if we have to caste concrete slab of 1 cubic metre size (which is wet volume of concrete) we have to buy and require dry ingredient of concrete cement, sand and aggregate 1.54 cubic metre.
What is 1.54 in dry volume of concrete calculation
we take one example if you throw one glass of water on stack of sand then you will find a Trench on sand when water is dropped, its happen due to evaporates of air voids from sand.
After adding water in dry mix of concrete the volume of concrete ingredients is reduced to a certain level (54%). It is happened due to the evaporation of air voids and pores in concrete ingredients.
Percentage of air voids in different dry ingredient of concrete
1) percentage of air voids and pores present in dry coarse aggregate is approx 32% to 34%
2) percentage of air voids and pores present in dry sand is approx 20% to 27%
3) actually cement is very fine particle so percentage of air voids and pores present in cement is neglected and not considerable
we add maximum percentage of air voids and pore present in aggregate that is 34% and sand that is 27% we have 61% of air voids between the particles of sand and aggregate.
So we have 61% of air voids and pores present between the particles of sand and aggregate when it is place in separate.
When we put all together dry ingredient of concrete cement sand and aggregate before adding water, percentage of some air voids and pores between the particles of sand and aggregate is evaporated and decrease to approx 7%.
So rest percentage of air voids= 61%_7%
Rest percentage of air voids before adding water we have 54%.
When we dry mix of ingredient of concrete cement sand and aggregate after adding water percentage of air voids and pores between the particles of cement, sand and aggregate is evaporated and decrease to approx 54%
It means if we have to caste concrete slab of 1 cubic metre size (which is wet volume of concrete) we have to buy and require dry ingredient of concrete cement, sand and aggregate 1.54 cubic metre.
Why we take dry volume of concrete in calculation
If you want to estimate and calculate concrete ingredient then you need to know dry volume of concrete
To estimate and calculate concrete quantity with just take 1 dimension from drawing and then calculate the volume of structure the result we get is the actual concrete quantity and that is wet volume of concrete, dry volume of concrete is increase by 54% of wet volume of concrete
If you order and purchase ready mix concrete for your construction work then you need actual volume of concrete that is wet volume
If you do the work for ready mix concrete at the construction site manually then you need calculation of dry volume of concrete.
Because, suppose if you have work of roof casting of 1 cubic metre of concrete slab that is wet volume of concrete than you should buy 54% more amount of concrete ingredient like cement sand and aggregate from market.
Calculation of dry volume of concrete
Dry volume = wet volume (100/100+54/100)
Dry volume = wet volume ( 1+0.54)
Dry volume = wet volume × 1.54
if wet volume of concrete = 1 cum
Than dry volume will be 1.54 cum

difference between wet volume and dry volume of concrete
Difference between dry volume and wet volume of concrete are following:-
1) dry volume means volume of ingredient of concrete like sand cement and aggregate in mix dry condition before adding water.
Wet volume means volume of ingredient of concrete like sand cement and aggregate in wet mix after adding water
2) dry volume of concrete is approx 54% is more than wet volume of concrete
wet volume of concrete is approx 54% less than dry volume of concrete
3) dry volume of concrete have approx 54% of air voids and fine pores present between the particles of sand cement and aggregate
wet volume of concrete have approx negligible air voids and fine pores present between the particles of sand cement aggregate and water
4) dry volume of concrete is taken for estimate and calculation of concrete ingredient when it is prepared ready mix at the construction site manually
wet volume of concrete is taken for estimate and calculation of concrete ingredient when we order and purchase prepared ready mix concrete for construction work.
Dear Sir,
I would like to prepare M35 grade dry concrete with a setting time of half of an hour.
Kindly Give your suggestion.
Desired Grade of concrete is achieved after conducting various trials on constituent materials. As properties of materials vary from query to query, we cannot conclude a standrad formula. However, strength of concrete is directly related to water-cement ratio
What is your reference sir…for 1.54 factor…
54% volume decrease of dry concrete is wrong, but 0.54 divided to 1.54 equal 35% volume decrease.
