In this topic we know about how much quantity of cement and sand is required for 100 sq ft plastering work and cement mortar calculation for plastering and how to calculate cement sand quantity for plastering.
We know that plaster is a thin layer of mortar applied over the rough surface of brick wall and it act as a “damp proof coat “over the brick work.
Plastering also provide fine and finish surface over the brick wall that is firm and smooth and it enhances the appearance of brick wall building. And also plaster is act as protection material for ceiling and brick wall against climatic factor and also remove surface Imperfection of brick wall and make it a smooth.

According to binding material there are different types of plastering like cement plaster lime, plaster and clay plaster. basically today in modern time cement plaster is used for plastering of interior wall exterior wall and ceiling of building.
Selection of right plastering material:- the right material that is used for plaster in surface protection against climatic change like heat, temperature, Earth pressure and sever weather condition and it is also a cheap and economical it can be durable and sustain climatic change and having excellent workability.
What are different plastering thickness:- The typical thickness of wall plastering is range between 10-20 mm (or 0.4-0.8 inch). Rough surface of brick masonry requires 20 mm thick plastering and for plane surface of brick masonry 10-12 mm thick plastering is required.
The typical thickness of wall plaster is between 10 and 20 mm (or 0.4 and 0.8 inches). Rough surfaces of a brick wall require plaster with a thickness of 20 mm, for plane surface of brick masonry 10-12 mm thick plastering is required.
Plastering thickness depends on rough and plane surfaces brick masonry work. Rough surface of brick masonry work require thick layer of plastering material 20 mm thick. Plane surface of brick masonry work require thick layer of plastic material 12mm and plane surface of ceiling plastering material require 8mm thick. so plastering thickness of brick masonry work ranging from 6 to 20 mm thick
●There are different types of plastering wall thickness, different plastering types there are different types of plastering wall thickness.
Plastering of the internal plane surface of brick masonry work known as internal plastering, apply single coat of 12 mm thick, so internal plastering thickness is 10mm to 12mm.
Outer rough surface of brick masonry work is known as external plastering, applying double coat of 20 mm thick layer, so external plastering thickness is 20mm in which first coat applied with 12 mm thick layer and after this second coat is applied with 8mm thick
Plane surface of ceiling plastering of single coat is apply having 6 mm thickness, so thickness of plastering for ceiling is 6 mm.
Plastering thickness for brick wall is about 6mm to 20 mm in which their types external plastering thickness is 20 mm, internal plastering thickness is 12mm and ceiling plaster thickness is 6mm.
Cement sand mix ratio for plastering of brick masonry wall
Mix ratio for plastering are different for different plastering types like external plastering, internal plastering and ceiling plastering of brick wall and concrete. Cement mix ratio for plastering depends on a rough and plane surface of brickwork.
● Plastering mix ratio 1:6 or 1:5 ( one part is cement and 6 part is sand) is used for internal plastering work for the plane surface of brick wall
● Cement mix ratio for plastering 1:4 (1 part is cement and 4 part is sand ) is used for external plastering work for rough surface of brick wall
● Plastering mix ratio 1:3 ( one part is cement and 3 part is sand) is used for external plastering where protection against abrasive climatic condition and repair wall is needed and for ceiling plastering.
Cement mix ratio for external plastering is 1:4 or 1:5, for internal plastering is 1:6 or 1:5 and for ceiling plastering is 1:3 is used for brick wall.
How much quantity of cement and sand is required for 100 sq ft plastering
How much cement required for 100 sq.feet area? The typical amount of cement required for 100 sq. feet area of external wall plastering is 85 kg (or 1.7 bags of 50kg) and 100 sq ft of internal wall plastering require 43 kg (or 0.86 bags of 50kg) cement.
How much sand required for 1 brass plaster? In general, the amount of sand required for 1 brass (100 sq ft) external plaster is 384 kg (8.4 CFT) and for internal wall plaster 240 kg (5.24 CFT) of sand required. It depends on thickness of plaster and we know 1 brass = 100 sq ft.
◆ Steps for cement mortar calculation for plastering are following:-
1) calculate surface area of plaster work
2) calculate dry volume of mortar needed
3) calculate quantity of cement
4) calculate quantity of sand
Cement mortar calculation for internal plastering
Suppose length of room = 10ft
Width of room = 10 ft
Area of plaster = 10×10=100 sq ft
Four easy calculation we should convert square feet into square metre
1sq ft = 0.0929 m2
100 sq ft = 100×0.0929 = 9.29 m2
Internal plastering thickness = 12 mm = 0.012m
Now volume = 9.29× 0.012 =0.11148 m3
Consider 20% extra volume of cement mortar used for joint filling and rough side surface and wastage
20% of 0.11148 = 0.022296 m3
Now total wet volume = 0.11148+ 0.022296
Wet volume = 0.133776 m3
Dry volume = wet volume× 1.33
Dry volume = 0.133776× 1.33= 0.278 m3
And mix ratio is 1:5 in which one part is cement and 5 part is sand and total proportion = 1+5 =6
◆ Cement mortar calculation for plastering
Density of cement = 1440 kg/m3
One bag cement = 50 kg
Weight = volume × density
Weight of cement in kg
= (1× 0.178 m3 ×1440 kg/m3)/6= 42.701 kg
No of bag cement = 42.701/50 = 0.86
0.86 number of bags (43 Kg) of cement is required for 100 square feet internal wall plastering of brick wall.
When plastering 12mm interior walls, the typical amount of cement required for 100 sq ft of plastering with 1:5 mix ratio is 43 kg (or 0.86 bags). Plastering (1:5) requires 43 kg (or 0.86 bags) of cement per 100 square feet.
How much sand required for 100 square feet plastering
Usually sand is calculated in cubic feet. So cubic metre is converted into cubic feet
1m3 = 35.32 cuft
Volume of sand in cubic feet
= (5 × 0.178× 35.32)/6 = 5.24 cft
● Ans. :- 0.86 no of bags (43 kgs) & 5.24 cu ft sand quantity required for 100 square feet plaster for internal brick wall plastering
When plastering 12mm interior walls, the typical amount of sand required for 100 sq ft of plastering with 1:5 mix ratio is 240 kg (or 5.24 CFT). Internal wall Plastering (1:5) requires 240 kg (or 5.24 CFT) of sand per 100 square feet.
How much sand & cement required for 100 square feet internal wall plastering
When plastering 12mm interior walls with 1:5 mix ratio, that’s 240 kg (5.24 CFT) of sand and 43 kg (0.86 bags) of cement are required for 100 square feet plastering
Cement mortar calculation for ceiling plastering
100 sq ft = 100×0.0929 = 9.29 m2
Mortar thickness = 6 mm = 0.006m
Now volume = 9.29× 0.006 =0.05574 m3
Consider 20% extra volume of mortar used for joint filling and rough side surface and wastage
20% of 0.05574 = 0.011148 m3
Now total wet volume = 0.11148+ 0.05574
Wet volume = 0.66888 m3
Dry volume = wet volume× 1.33
Dry volume = 0.66888× 1.33= 0.089 m3
And mix ratio is 1:4 in which one part is cement and 4 part is sand and total proportion = 1+4 =5

Now volume = 9.29× 0.02 =0.1858 m3
Consider 20% extra volume of mortar used for joint filling and rough side surface and wastage
20% of 0.1858 = 0.03716 m3
Now total wet volume = 0.1858+ 0.03716
Wet volume = 0.22296 m3
Dry volume = wet volume× 1.33
Dry volume = 0.22296× 1.33= 0.2965 m3
